Hard mode: capeshit doesn't count because it isn't intended for english speaking adult viewers.

>>83671215
that would be romance or action
>>
Shouldn't it be called terror?
>>
That would be romcoms

Pretty much, yeah.

And for the most part it isn't even scary. It's just moronic.
>>
>>83671215
Man,horror sucks. People hyped up the Conjuring and Conjuring 2 and it was bad. Wasn't scary at all,it just had standard jump scares.
>>
>>83671215
True horror is great, but very few movies pull it off, maybe 1/10 if you're already filtering out the bullshit.

Most "horror" movies are really just scary movies, and yeah, those movies have a low IQ level. Real horror has an IQ range alongside good dramas, since both relate to the human psyche. But again, it's a rare find.
>>
>>83671542
Post "true horror" then. I've been trying to get into this genre but it seems more trouble than it's worth. Is "The Thing" true horror? Thinking about watching it tonight.
>>
>>83671215
For the most part: yes.
Its a genre filled with piles of shitty movies that are mainly jumpscares, but if you dig through the crap you can find some that have the potential to disturb you not necessarily using gore which is what the genre should be mixed with a few jumps in small doses. What that movie is depends on your fears for the most part though. But the majority of it is shit that relies on loud noises and monsters popping out of nowhere so yes since all you need is the ability to see and hear.
>>
>>83671612
The Thing is horror movie ans is pure kino.
It really depends what you mean by horror. Even the thing is merely thrilling in this respect. If you are looking for terrifying 200-beats-per-minute paralyzing moments, you won't find them outside of vidya which is a much better suited medium for that.
>>
A lot of horror are low iq these days. There are some true horror that terrifies you and give you nightmares I think those ones are high iq because it fucks with your mentality also it gotta make you think. Gore/zombies/ghost are low iq cause it's played out too much. I don't see many Vampires after the twilight shit. Don't see anymore monster either. Horror movies with killers is ok too it really all depends.
>>
>>83671215
>english speaking
>pretty much all capeshit is done in an English speaking country, and that's where most of its audience is.

Really makes you think.
>>
>>83672250
I'm looking for a looming sense of danger. That's the thing that got me to look more closely into the genre. I enjoy that "something is off but I'm not sure what" mystery aspect. Gore is boring and jump scares I don't like.

I know the movie "Get Out" is not really horror but that had a "jump scare" where a woman just walked across a hallway in the background. I remember everyone gasping in the threatre because it scared them shitless, me too. That was fun, it kinda just showed how immersed I was into the movie when I was be scared by a maid walking. Scary faces coming towards the screen really fast is not fun.

These. Terror is basically a separate genre from low IQ dumbass horror.
>>
>>83671612
The thing is an absolutely amazing movie, and if you like it, you should watch alien as well.
If you want to complete the trifecta of sci fi horror you might as well watch predator, although it might count more as an action movie than a horror movie.
>>
>>83672450
>that's where most of its audience is.
they're made for chinamen and brazilians. they intentionally avoid stretches of dialogue because those don't translate as well.
>>
>>83672485
"It follows". Don't ask questions, just fucking watch it ASAP if you want that feeling
>>
>>83672537
Predator is a great film, I like the suspense in that too even though I always approached it from a Schwarzenegger action movie angle.
>>
>>83672578
I realize i am samefagging but i couldnt be more serious about the necessity of you watching it folllows.
>>
>>83672667
I posted >>83672578 but thanks for the support, it follows is an amazing flick
>>
>>83672667
ok I will and I won't google the synopsis but if it's that sexually transmitted disease movie I've heard of it really better be good
>>
>>83671215
I disagree 100%, not to say its a pretentious thought provoking genre but like many genres its bloated and full of more bad and good. Horror or true horror is both concept and the destruction of the human condition. Its rare though to find a movie that manages to do this while still maintaining a sensible plot and characters. Imo books seeve horror better than movies.

Problem is that horror in american film has become so centered on tradition and demonic middleclass myth thats its rare to venture beyond that.
>>
>>83672769
It is indeed the STD allegory movie. It's a very good simple horror movie that relies on a constant feeling of dread, without resorting to jumpscares or flashy effects.
>>
a true kinosseur recognizes that horror is supposed to be shitty and is merely a vehicle for increasing sexual tension
>>
>>83671215
Let us recall the words of Ted Sturgeon: 85% of sci-fi is crap, but that doesn't matter, because 85% of everything is crap.
>>
>>83671215
no, porn is
>>
>>83673879
stop spouting shit out of your ass
the director confirmed its a realization of a fear from childhood, of someone constantly stalking them without ever stopping, and the sex was just added as a means of transmission
>>
video games are more scary because you have the life of the character in your hands.
>>
snuff horror like hostel and saw are absolute pleb tier
>>
>>83671215
>lowerst

>>83671237
Yep, rom-coms are definitely below horror.

In terms of viewers, maybe. It takes some highly intelligent writers and crew to make a good modern day horror movie though

>Is horror the lowest IQ film genre?

No. Actually, people who like b-movies, low budget horror in particular, tend to have higher IQs.

thriller is the highest IQ film genre
hard mode: [spoilers]determine which films are only horror and which only thriller[/spoilers]
>>
>>83676667
higher IQ than the average people who make capeshit and disney movies top grossers, doesn't mean much.
I'm sure fans of many very specific genres that don't play all summer in mall theatres have "a higher IQ".
>>
>>83676738
thiller is truly the best movie genre
>>
>>83676907
Lol. Go on any serious film site, and you'll fine a ton of people who watch like Mario Bava and old Hammer horror flicks. Just because a lot of critics and middle-brow shitheads like the OP look down on horror doesn't mean hardcore cinemaphiles and actual directors/screenwriters/etc. do. There's a reason Criterion releases films like Carnival of Souls and Eyes Without a Face. Guarantee every one of your favorite directors loves horror films your pleb ass has never heard of.
>>
>>83677959
some guy whose job it is to make movies knows about movies I haven't heard of and that makes him smart and me dumb. that's really the argument you're going with? I mean I'm sure you're right, they probably all do.
>>
>>83671612
I'd say True Horror is something that bases the fear response on something other than fear of death.

The Thing is a great example because death isn't what causes the most fear. It's the fact that it induces fear confinement, paranoia, isolation and weight of responsibility that makes The Thing so effective.
>>
>>83671215
Yeah
You could argue that it's action but the worst that action has to offer is far better than the worst horror
>>
>>83671215
>looks down on people as less intelligent for their taste
>can't even spell
