It probably helped, but the televised poker tournaments were becoming popular before that film, and I think that subculture gaining popularity was one of the reasons it was changed to it from Baccarat for "modernizing" the Craig version.

Just one deck. The thing about short stack poker is that there's too few chips to make complex moves or bluffs. It's essentially bet, flop, all-in ; so in general playing only good cards means you win.

>>
>>83677625

wrong. its all about probability in the long run. If you play the odds correctly, the numbers have to work out over time.

so while you may experience short term bad / good luck, the numbers always work themselves out
>>
>>83679615

How many times a year do you go north and hide your big chips against an amateur?
>>
>>83671702
No; the replacement of baccarat with poker in that movie was a result of the boom, not the instigator of it. The FBI's decision to treat poker as a game of skill and not to try too hard to enforce the laws against online gambling were the chief reason it grew. The sites making money off of it plowed it all into sponsoring poker TV shows to get more users.

It worked great. Then the FBI shut them all down and suddenly poker was completely off television and consumer interest was gone within a year.
>>
>>83679749

are you referring to the alec torelli thing? it's a weird spot, because im not sure he would even give a shit enough to try angle shooting like that , but at the same time someone with as much experience as him should just keep those large chips visible as second nature...

so not sure what really happened there.

but no, i do not intentionally do that
>>
>>83679868

What about going north or south though in home games?
>>
>>83679904

Depends on the home game... Just a personal decision on whether you want to angle shoot or not

No real poker strategy here.

>>
>>83681076
Poker really makes you think.
>>
>>83680376
>>83680376

thats actually a more complicated answer than you think it is..

people vastly underestimate live variance. and to be honest luck is more involved than pros like to admit.

all you can really do is play the odds correctly, try and put yourself in good positions, and hope that you're not on the wrong side of variance for any extended period of time.
bluffing isnt as big of a part of the game as some people think it is. bluffing is only really used when blockers are involved.

the dark secret though is that there are some people who simply run better (or worse) than others.

luck is a bell curve, and some people are outliers.

most people fall in the middle though, and with proper play can have positive expected value and make money long term
>>
>>83671702
I'd say rounders more then any other movie, online and espn airing it 24/7
>>
Why tf do people watch poker?
>>
>>83681243

because if you understand the game its engaging. you judge their moves, you cheer good bluffs and feel the crushing blow when they hit a 1 outer.

if you dont understand the game on any type of deeper level, then im sure its boring as shit

Have they found Dwan's body yet in China? It's crazy how one minute I was playing against Dwan on fulltilt where he would hit and run for like 40 dollars at 1/2 nl tables , the next minute he is playing for multi millions in cash games, and then the next he takes his whole bankroll to Macau China for min entry to play against the worlds richest billionaires and loses it all and goes missing. Fulltilt is (or was) a poker online site. Don't know if it's still around because I haven't played poker in a long time and In USA you couldn't play online during a period for cash. Anyway, Dwan back in the day (I'd say 2008 or 2009) use to hit and run small cash games to build his bank roll. At the time he used the full tilt cat avatar and he became sort of a joke among everyone because he didn't play honest and many refused to sit the hand when he came to the table.

There are many stories and rumours. Like most high stakes poker players he's a complete degenerate gambler. He lost a shit load of money in Macau and owes millions to Dan Cates. I think he lost one pot that was worth 20 million KEK.

He hasn't done shit in poker both live and online in years. The guy is probably some chinaman's sex slave.

There is only racial segregation, 888 poker knows if you're white or not by how much you deposit into your player account. If you're a cheapskate then you don't get to play, in fact you get banned and the police arrest you for being poor.

But in all seriousness yes there is segregation because 888 is a recruitment site like most others where sponsors look for skilled players and recruit them, hence the elitism and separate rooms for the better players.

You should know this though?

I don't play 888, may do though. On some sites they have tables where you can only play one at a time, figured it'd be something like that. If you get a few rooms going they can be pretty juicy though. Ipoker on a friday is ridiculous.
>>
>>83671015
That you, Bluffin' Ted?
>>
>>83683015
I haven't played in a while because it's STINKY STINK STINK but yeah there's elitist tables but those aren't a bad thing imo.

If you do join 888 they give you £20 free play so enjoy! Not that I endorse them or any other gambling site, just don't get suckered in by it, I can see how poker, blackjack and others can be addictive, not even about winning cash but just playing. It's a strange one, don't get into debt, I used to know someone that was/is £100,000 worth of debt, he was on Jeremy Kyle show. No joke.

Wow. Tom Confirmed dead by Triads. They payed off poker tv to film a previous tournament he was in as new footage. Holy shit. He is wearing the exact same clothes in pic posted.

Come to the UK and watch late night television, most of it is poker/roulette and infomercials. Fucking Gibraltar with all its gambling. I don't play online anymore and if I do it's usually just fun/free with no real cash used. Developed a bit of a craving for Mahjong, it's a fun, easy and pointless game those crazy Japanese with their weird tiles. Love those guys.
>>
>>83672934
kassouf is a funny guy, don't think he's that good though really, also no mention of online probably down sums on it. He played Stacey Matewso or w.e her name is HU and didn't even study at all for it.

>>83682473

hey sorry im just getting to this.

i play 5/5 and 5/10.

table hopping is completely normal and not frowned upon and a regular occurrence. I change tables frequently.

when you get there just get on the wait list, then when you sit down and get your chips, feel free to walk around and look at the other tables. if you want on one, you just ask the floorman to put you on the table change list. then whenever a seat opens up, you have first dibs if you want it. happens all day every day, people are always switching around.

standard open is 3x bb + 1 bb per limper. never vary based on the strength of your hand, makes you very easy to read/play against.
>>
>>83683518
Mahjong is probably big draw to people who think they've 'solved' poker
>>
>>83683621
I kinda meant random varying. Played live a bit and the opens were way bigger than that, made playing short stack very profitable. That was 2/5 though. Not even rolled for it but will play ss sometimes.
>>
>>83683748
Nah, it's just relaxing. Also Benger is a bender.
>>
>>83683748
people who think they've solved poker or that poker is solved? Gotta assume MJ is easier to solve than non-fixed limit poker
>>
>>83683754
>>83683754

oh yeah fish vary opening sizes like crazy.

and i should clarify, you always want to adapt to the table. so if 4xbb is standard open, then do that.

but yeah some people have no concept and will like 10xbb open utg . just have you adjust your range based on their perceived range

>>83672511
he played it straight and got rewarded

can someone post some good unknown Tony G games? I've seen all his main shit. I actually watch the full games with him and Mike I enjoy the banter and how much fun Tony makes the game look even when he's losing.
>>
>>83681154
>the dark secret though is that there are some people who simply run better (or worse) than others.
>luck is a bell curve, and some people are outliers
are you implying there's an inherent component to luck that persists between games, or just that some people will have good luck at a bunch of games because there are so many people participating that someone has to?
>>
>>83683927
If this isn't possible, optimal play in every situation would also count as solution
>>
>>83684063
well to be honest the whole GTO thing people talk is a bit of an oxymoron because most of the time the most optimum play is the one the exploits your opponent the most, but what GTO refers to is more the perfect balanced equilibrium of spots, bet sizings etc.. which may give you an idea of how it is so much easier to work out for HU. it's only when you get to reg wars at the top of HU or 6max with GTO=the most optimum strat.

I think all that guy is saying is results won't necessarily reflect skill. Particularly live because hands are slower. You can play 100k cash hands and still be heavily above or below expectation

What do you recommend beginners do to learn?
>>

HONEY!!!!!
>>
>>83686647
Not him but an online player. Can only answer for NLHE. Best general book I've read is "Harrington on Cash Games: How to Play No-Limit Hold 'em Cash Games"
Peter Clarke has an e-book, which is very good for modern cash games called "The Grinders Manual".
A very good theoretical book is "Applications of No-Limit Hold 'em" by Mathew Janda.
Possibly the most complex and advanced book currently available is"The Mathematics of Poker" by Bill Chen, which I haven't read but is apparently very complicated.

I can understand why he folded. It's the first hand of the tournament so he has zero read on how she plays and if he is losing, and a lot of hands do beat him, then he's knocked out straight away and that would be just as embarrassing.

In total ignorance she played the hand so strongly as >>83688337 says, that if she did have the hand she was representing then he can't be winning.

It's one of the reasons pro players always say playing against complete beginners is the hardest as you can never put them on a hand.

I agree. When it comes to aggro fish (more in cash than tourneys) they spew so much that it makes sense to make mathematically -ev folds in more spots and wait to stack them.

Utter bullshit. Schwartz was definitely in the wrong for abusing the rules, but it's a competition and he did what he could to win. The real question is why the timekeepers would even allow the clock to be called after less than a minute has passed.

You are a bunch of idiots. Poker shows are completely scripted, just like wrestling. They just generate drama and shock. It's not real.

Why's that so hard to believe? Lots of people enjoy reading a bunch of dipshits sitting around posting retarded things on a Mongolian tin can telephony network.
