It was gimped by all the civil war shit that was just fucking useless and took the movie out of this universal human context and put it in the immature and shitty american history context, but otherwise it was great.

If you cut away the civil war interlude at the bridge, it is in my opinion the most watchable, if not outright best movie of all time.

The old american west as portrayed in western movies alwas was a fictional construct more than an actual historical setting. It's more of an abstract concept, the "Wasteland", a lawless place where people struggle to survive and violence is just another aspect of life. There's somethijg very broad and universal about it, which is why it has such wide appeal.
