Cowboy Bebop's storytelling is in subtlety and worldbuilding more than the character interactions and plot. There's so much that goes in to the design and atmosphere that you can't get that all in a 2 hour movie.

Television is a perfect format for something so stylised.

What I meant by this is that part of why it's so popular is that it appeals to non-anime fans, simply because it feels more like a western film than a typical anime. This basically results in a lot of people who really haven't watched all that much anime (can't really blame them, it takes a lot of wading through shit to find the good stuff) claiming Cowboy Bebop is one of the best, while really great stuff that might be a little less well known is left unseen. It's a great show, nonetheless. I just feel it's overrated.
