Aren't Hobbits just a offshoot of men though? Granted their aww shucks country folk but their still pretty much long lived short men.

It would be amazing for any child to grow up in a place like The Shire and it would greatly increase the chance that he becomes a good-spirited adult.

Either the hobbits share the gift (and they do die, live a little longer than usual but certainly die) and they're men in spirit or are beasts of some kind and just die and thats it.
