I really can't see him doing the deadpan as well as Neo. And, yes, Neo being utterly collected and seemingly devoid of warmth when he's plugged-in makes perfect sense. We know the Matrix world is less real to him even though he's (perhaps) the most powerful entity within in. It's all a charade and he can actually see it.
