Autism Coop is the best part of any episode of Twin Peaks

Do any of y'all have any sorta theory or reason behind the fact that in terms of racial representation there aren't any people of color with main or significant supporting roles in any of David Lynch's works. He is my favorite director and I kinda wanna keep a blind eye and not research too much into this in the event that I find info that I won't like and can change my perception of him. IM NOT SAYING he's racist, but there has to be some sort of ignorance behind the lack of representation? For someone that has been working for as long as he has, to not have a diverse cast in at least one work is kinda odd to me..

Dune, erasherhead, lost highway, twin peaks, blue velvet, wild at heart, Mulholland drive, inland empire etc etc. no black people or Hispanic people with any key roles besides being like a background cop actor etc. even this jade character is such a tiny, tiny role and it's a sexualized one at that. This is who I think "Mr.Strawberry" is. He IS the warden. "Mr. Strawberry" is a secret alias. The warden uses this alias for some wrong-doing that we might find out eventually (or not), but the important part is that EvilCoop knows this secret and used it to instill fear in him that will be put to later use. Perhaps this is how EvilCoop will prevent the warden from contacting Gordon about the experience they had with him.

Something people keep saying about Sonny Jim. At 12:13 in episode 5, people are saying he does a "backwards blink". I have a couple of comments about this. First, after watching it about 10 times this morning, I don't see anything strange about his blink, it literally looks like a normal blink. He just looks up and blinks.
Two, we've only ever seen this backwards phenomenon involving actual physical behavior like walking or talking or blinking in a noticeable way happening inside the lodge. The one exception in this season is Mr C saying "yrev" instead of very while talking to Gordon, and I think that's explainable by the fact he's a lodge entity in a way and he was reverting back or was scrambled after losing garmonbozia.
I just don't understand why sonny Jim would be blinking backwards. How would that even be happening outside the lodge? Why do people think he blinked backwards? Am I missing something here, because it seriously seems like a normal blink to me and like people are really reaching on this one.
Edit: damn, it really does look reversed with the original clip and the reversed clip, no idea whats going on.

Am I the only one who thinks the ending of the new part is really sad? I don't know why but I found the ending of the new part to be really mournful with a HEAVY tone and atmosphere. I may be the only one to feel such thing, but I sure was with my eyes wet as soon as the credits ended. I loved it.

I thought the statue was just meant to be some symbolic representation of the classic American hero, in this case, a cowboy. It's an obvious representation of Cooper's former self and he recognises something he can't quite explain in it.

Plus the whole shoes thing; "The shoes make the man."

That whole plotline is about how shitty the urban American middle-class experience is.

There's the whole notion of amnesiac Cooper trying to reconstruct his identity through repeated exposure to meaningless, vacuous middle-class existence and utterly failing, exposing the self-centredness of all the people living that existence. Nobody seriously asks what's wrong with him, and they don't think of sending him to a hospital either, all they do is help ferry him through dull life. e.g. the lady at the casino responds to his cry for help by encouraging him to gamble.
All the social interactions he has aren't seriously affected by the fact that he's near-mute because people don't care about his opinion in the first place. The guy who gets angry at him after he calls him a liar, the boss who sets him more work, the secretary (?) that lets him into the women's toilet, they all don't actually care about him or his opinions and feelings; all they want him to do is fulfill his various social roles (good co-worker, diligent employee, etc).

Even his wife doesn't give a shit about him. As long as he brings home the bacon as a good ol' nuclear American dad (via his casino winnings) she's happy to dress him, drop him off at work, treat him like a child, etc. I don't think it's a coincidence that Lynch decided to use a casino as a key plot element; it's where working and middle class people essentially donate their money to rich people in order to chase a rigged, illusory dream of success. That's pretty much the 'American dream' that Lynch is criticizing in a nutshell.

Interestingly the only person who treats him with something close to genuine concern is a black prostitute, someone who is very much not part of the Babbitt world everyone else is a part of.

This whole rebooted series is chock full of this kind of thing; Lynch has always been obsessed with exposing the seediness behind superficially nice American life and I'm glad he hasn't let up.

Honestly this, while I still get you. There's no real issue with Lynch's work featuring predominantly white people because he himself isn't thinking 'I'm not casting black actors in my work' or at least I'm almost certain he isn't. Sometimes when I imagine making a film I realise I don't naturally assign the characters to be black, although I would have no problem doing so. It's because I mostly associate with white people. Lynch grew up in mostly 'white America'. He's not racist, and like the other post says he doesn't have any problem casting disabled people or employing trans characters.

I also read Lynch on Lynch recently and I thought it was funny the interviewer decided to challenge Lynch on his hiring of Michael J. Anderson Carel Struycken as just a chance to exploit how weird they look. Lynch basically said he never saw it that way, and said they fit perfectly in the world of Twin Peaks. The interviewer pressed on, but Lynch shut him down. It's truly sad that someone would frame Lynch as exploitative for paying actors with strange physical traits to play characters with those same traits and giving them further job opportunities.

I think it's important to note that Lynch's works are frequently aimed at suburban/middle-class America (in a negative way, exposing the darkness behind seemingly-perfect people) and the thing is that what he draws from and criticizes is small-town Americana, which is predominantly very white.

I think it's at least somewhat intentional that so many characters are white, though I don't think that's inherently racist. He's just tackling themes that hit home better when it's represented by a majority of stereotypical white suburban folks.

Just want to throw it out there when we were first introduced to Coop as Dougie, yellow (the color of Garmonbozia!) was repeatedly a dominant color in the visuals of many scenes. When Coop saw the little floaty things above the winning slot machines they were outlined in yellow, when he came home to his angry wife the scene had a weird yellow light, (this ones a stretch, but) the yellow of the mustard that guy in the casino had on his hotdog caught my eye (he was a jerk and didn't really care about Coop), and in Episode 5 yellow flashed over the face of the guy in the meeting right before Coop called him a liar.
