Windom Earle is undoubtedly the best part of season two, he works in both aspects of Lynch's dualistic vision, surreal comedy and surreal horror. Windom Earle's disguises are the comfiest part of the show, having to spot him each episode was a true challenge. On the serious side of things Windom Earle is a lovecraftian hero who goes rogue from the FBI to find the truth about project bluebook. What is great about his dealings with the black lodge is that he has no master plan in mind at all. All he wants from the "end of the world" is man to man revenge on agent Cooper who had an affair with his life. Cooper broke Windom's life and Windom wants to break his. It is refreshing to have a villain with motives which are not world-changing nor unmotivated. His death is also one of the best parts of S2 because it reminds us Bob is the one to really fear and humbles Windom by showing him he is still and always was out of his depth meddling with a world not made for men. The pajamas in the flute scene symbolize the skin of man he is trapped in, lookig like human skin for its color and shape but also epitomizing human invention: clothing, and the flute acts a talisman into which he puts this humanity. Like Captain Ahab casting off his pipe before embarking on his suicidal voyage, Wyndhom Eaal plays his flute as one last praise of mankind before plunging headfirst into the judgement of gods and the infinite and unknown of the spiritual realm.

All things told, the official story is probably just that Leland was out of his mind, raped and murdered his daughter, while the FBI simultaneously managed to bust up a drug smuggling ring. Details like the Hornes owning a brothel on the other side of the border, the whole mill conspiracy, and obviously everything to do with the black lodge are probably dismissed as rumors and gossip apart from the half dozen or so people still aware of it.

it may be easy to forget with the new season and all the memefication of the black lodge how uncertain and unsettling those scenes were. Cooper was observer in a world of pure irrationality. The lodge spirits spoke in another language, acted in symbolic gesture, were one with the unstable flow of events. Cooper who is the one always in control in the real world is rendered completely passive in the lodge.

Then there's Earle, who seems to learn the language of the lodge. While we see Leland be taken over by Bob, it's not as if the man himself Leland Palmer learned to navigate the lodge. But Windom Earle is someone we see in the "real" world as a character make the transition to the abstract language of the lodge world. His control of that world is terrifying, it feels unexpected and daring to see this human being with an agency in what we initially thought was just Cooper's dream world. And then just as quickly the irrationality asserts itself again when Earle is extinguished by Bob. Once again we left without anyone we understand in the driver's seat.
