I'm not confident that they could. This is the same company that pumped out Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, and are now trying to boot up a SEPARATE Spider-Man universe, without Spider-Man (since they're using him in the MCU).

Maybe the director and lower were trying to push feminist whatever, but I'm somewhat confident that the Sony execs were just trying to latch onto some random social cause solely thinking it might help make them profitable.
