It Comes At Night, I feel like it's gonna be another Babadook: an excellent and entertaining movie at its core, but not a particularly scary one. It uses horror as window dressing rather than the main focus.

You want a good horror check out Green Room. It's got some genuinely gut-wrenching scenes in there and the late Anton Yelchin pulls in a great performance. As a whole it's a little shaky, but all the individual parts are fucking kino.

I watched the Void a few weeks ago, after hearing about it last year via a kickstarter campaign. Was a fun movie, with some pretty horrific moments. Felt very John Carpenter-esque. The plot didn't really make much sense though.

I really enjoyed this one as well. I agree the Lovecraftian-other-dimensional-hellraiser touch was confusing in translation. I suggest checking out the movie, A Dark Song. It's a bit slower and not as gorey, bit still spookier than most of it's modern competition.

Not really a recommendation, just want to see what you all think about Train to Busan. I was expecting a unique take on the zombie genre, but honestly it was as basic as they come. Constant dumb decisions being made, the zombies look goofy half the time, and the action doesnt really make sense. I had about 20 minutes left though but I doubt anything could have happened to save it from mediocrity.

The scene where the father accidentally kills his son's girlfriend made little sense. How did she even get in when they couldn't get out?

I also feel like the "twist" of having the girl not be a witch but accused of being a witch and thus murdered, which turned her into a witch in death was actually pretty ridiculous, but it felt like the filmmakers thought this was indeed a really creative twist.

I don't get the hate on It Follows...
I thought the really slow "villain" or however you want to call it made it much better. You could always get away, but it never stopped following you, until you were dead or passed it on and that person died.
The thing is, the monster isn't even that fear inducing, but in the end the constant pressure just made her kill herself, which gave me a much stronger horror feeling than all those crazy villains that can just one-shot everyone.

I went in with high hopes, it was probably the first trailer I've seen in years that actually hyped me for the movie.

I see your point and generally get the criticism about it being boring or slow or the "evil" not being intimidating enough, but i found the atmosphere coming from that really astonishing.
That moment of constant dread, despair and impending doom, but in such a kind of ridiculous way really did it for me. But maybe I just have strange taste oder it just hit personally somehow.

Event Horizons "hell scenes" were pretty neat, wish they had done a bit more with that.

The Ape (original title: Apan) is a horror-esque movie. Very great. The main character becomes increasingly miserable throughout the movie.

Olle Sarri, who plays the main character, was not allowed to read the script before filming. The movie was shot in chronological order, with Sarri coming to the set every day without having the slightest idea what was going to happen. I'm very excited for It Comes At Night, but I think it will be more scary than the Babadook.
