That his soul had been trapped in the Overlook for centuries. In the book the guy reincarnates himself just to destroy the Overlook to hopefully free himself / everyone else from the Curse. He ends up freeing everyone but dooming himself to be a ghost for the rest of eternity.

>After its premiere and a week into the general run (with a running time of 146 minutes), Kubrick cut a scene at the end that took place in a hospital. The scene shows Wendy in a bed talking with Mr. Ullman who explains that Jack's body could not be found; he then gives Danny a yellow tennis ball, presumably the same one that Jack was throwing around the hotel. This scene was subsequently physically cut out of prints by projectionists and sent back to the studio by order of Warner Bros., the film's distributor. This cut the film's running time to 144 minutes

The Shining is very much a movie based on unsettling imagery. That's it.
Anyone trying to find a "meaning" to Jack being in the picture or the Easter Bunny getting a blowjob is missing the point entirely.

Stop saying that like you know what you're talking about. Fucking hipster.

He was never a writer in the modern day, just the ghost of some bellhop .
Judging by solely the film itself, he became part of the hotel in the 20s where he enjoyed himself drinking and partying.

Its explained more in the comic. Basically Jack is part ghost, part human, part cyborg sent from the future of the past.
