The real question is if Childs was a Thing why didn't he? And why even go and sit with Mac, why not just leave him to die and go and freeze somewhere else.

Because Mac was too exhausted after the encounter with the Thing in the cave, and Childs was based.

Maybe Childs is a Thing, maybe he isn't. Either way MacReady will be dead soon, there is nothing more he can do. He just laughs at the situation, he has no way of knowing for sure whether Childs is a Thing and he can't do anything about it anyway. May as well share a drink with Childs on the off-chance that he's still human.

I'm pretty sure Carpenter went on record and said Childs was a thing. He said there's subtle clues that point to this. 1.they filled all the bottles woth gas to make molitoves with and Childs doesn't flinch when he takes a drink. Also there isn't any steam coming from his breathing in the cold and it shows with Mac.

The film establishes that the Thing is willing to wait to strike so it's not surprising. And it wants to eat Mac, if it burns him xe can't eat Macs delicious meat.

Playing mindgames on whoever's going to pick the bodies up. It'd look weird to find two guys who sat down to freeze to death in separate locations. You'd expect any survivors of whatever happened to burn the place down would hovel together in the same spot.
