I'm not a Maher supporter but I enjoyed his use of the word nigger in a casual televised conversation. I think this sort of usage should be normalised because the word nigger is forced upon society constantly through music, films, books and loud-mouthed comedians. It seems undesirable for this word to exist in popular usage which it absolutely does, if it can't be said by a large part of the population without massive reprimands.
