>canon ending

In the ending of the novel, the Aliens all contract human germs and die, despite humiliating every military might the humans can throw at them.

In this movie, the virus makes the aliens weakened, thus allowing the U.S. military (who was only pretending to be dead), to rush in and save the day.

So that's not the canon ending to War of the Worlds. That's the canon ending to Independence Day.

They want to steal our resources, so they come here millions of years ago, before we've evolved, and then plant their giant robots directly under the sites of where we're going to build our cities millions of years later, once we've evolved, so they can kill us all and steal our resources that they could have just taken at any time before we evolved.

you don't go for a full run at the grocery store if your cupboards are already full.

spielberg has never explained shit when it comes to his alien movies (or any major worldbuilding, honestly) because he's focusing on other things (famalam bonds! generational differences! etc!).

think of it this way ("signs" too): the aliens are either overwhelmingly arrogant ("dumb species, we'll just take it", hubris defeats them) or desperate enough ("can we work fast enough before their climate kills us?") - oorr bootthhh - to come get what they need.
>>
Movie was 90% running around while CG blows up around our heroes. The only good scene was the one in the basement with the crazy guy but it has no pay off and doesn't justify the rest of the boring garbage.

It's a proto 2010+ blockbuster basically. If you like this movie but also hate all of the modern big budget garbage hollywood's been shoveling down our throats you're a hypocrite.

No thunderchild scene, nor any ability for humans to fight back at all for that matter. In the novel they at least put up a fight, albeit an insufficient one. Everyone who even tried to fight them in the movie was basically shown to be a retard, instead of brave. So much for the spirit of man.

Also, Morgan Freeman's voice is disgusting. Actually put me off the whole movie when they opened his awful rasping instead of just ripping Richard Burton's performance, which was about a billion times better, straight out of the musical.

Its pretty brazy cuz It is just an giant octopus in the city and likes fucking with them to scare them so they taste better and they can overpower them (since It is actually really weak unless they're afraid).

Like It just goes up to their house and like reaches into their bedrooms and trolls them all day. Like in that scene he has his buddy aliens and then he floods the basement with red shit and makes Tom go into the basement and then he sock puppets the vacuum cleaner and then jumps out like OOOGA BOOGA BOOGA STOOPID DOG and then Tom runs away all scare and thats the whole point. sick sadistic childish shit to scare a child that the aliens actually enjoy doing. they're like that tails gets trolled comic where bugs bunny acts all gay and retarded

And this is why he's one of the great directors of his generation. """Worldbuilding""" is just another word for spoonfeeding and it only belongs in cheap fantasy novels/flicks. True kinography focuses on the human element of a story
>>
how many times has this happened?

advanced alien race, capable of interstellar travel attempt to invade earth, yet they are killed by the most basic things that even a retarded human could predict and safeguard against.

what are helmets? what are vaccines? what are spacesuits?

the stupidest aliens i can think of are the ones from signs. water is deadly to them yet they invade a planet which is like 90% water

>>
>>83508873
no it was shit. the humans were dumb to believe they won. all that happened in the end was the scouts or "first wave" of aliens to die off from disease. their are still billions of aliens remaining in orbit or in their homeworld...
once they aliens figure out what went wrong they will adapt and try again and succeed in taking over earth.

Hell, we don't even know how to get back to the Moon anymore, everything has to be designed from scratch again. I'd assume after a few million years they'd forget about one or two things too.

it was actually necrotic skin bacteria, the kind that festers on even an inch of our skin tissue at all times. the kind that our bodies are completely resistant to due to our immune system, and only takes over when we die.

the martians have no immune system. they have no antibodies. they literally began to rot where they stood

Not that guy, but it's true, we don't even remember how to make spacecraft able to get to the moon anymore. Can't remember why, but for some reason or another we just forgot or lost the information on how to build efficient rockets and spacecraft since the 60s. Think it had something to do with not writing the shit down or something lmao

Anyway, I think his point is that sometimes things get lost and people forget about really really important shit. Not entirely out of the question, but when it's something as simple and fundamental as bacteria, I don't think that's an adequate explanation for when an advanced alien race just seemed to forget or not know about it.
>>
>>83514798
It's true doe, most of the manufacturing capability for the Apollo technology is gone, the very obsolete stuff like the Apollo Guidance Computer can't be built anymore. You have to design a whole new rocket, lunar ferry, lander, spacesuit and anything related to that from scratch.

NASA is doing that right now with the SLS and the Orion.

He was young and seeing a whole bunch of people die would fuck you up. His heart was in the right place see ferry scene where he helped people. He was young and naive, there are shots of him so angry at the machines and wanting to fight back. Suicidal or not sometimes you just want to fight back or whatever.

So chalk it up to him being pissed, naive, young, maybe scared and terrified. There were fucking machines killing 100s of people infront of you, god knows how many in the world. I would be shitting myself and I can't even imagine how I'd cope. Do you expect some kid to think straight and make logical decisions in extreme high stress situations?

>>
>>83515596
Honestly, I would have been fine if we'd gotten a Thunderchild moment with a modern ship. You don't strictly need it to be an old ironclad for the triumph and despair of that moment to work.
>>
>>83515699
That's true, but modern military ships don't have to get in close anymore.
>>
>>83515798
You could show them unloading fucking everything on the martians until they're completely out of any long-range ordinance and then as a last-ditch thing to save civilians some more time to evacuate they just ram the closest martian, taking it by surprise.

Or have a Martian walk up to the ship until it's too close to safely fire missiles at it, but they decide to just fire their nuclear ordinance at it rather than let it tear the ship apart without any retaliation, knowing they'll blow themselves up as well. That'd be a bit too jihadi though, probably.

Thunderchild is the best part of the book. The MC is caught up in a mass exodus with 6 million people from England trying to escape to the continent. He's trying to get on a ship to cross the channel, and just as the ramp is closing before he can get on he sees his wife he's been searching for already onboard. The ship pulls away and three alien tripods stride into the mouth of the bay to block its exit. Just before the ship is blasted by the Martians, the HMS Thunderchild, an ironclad torpedo-ram comes out of the fog. It rams one of the tripods, destroying it with the explosive prow. The other two tripods try to gas the thunder child but it has no effect. Then the Thunderchild unleashes its cannons on the tripods, destroying a second. Finally, the Martians blast the Thunderchild with their heat rays and destroy it, but the Thunderchild's sacrifice allows the civilian ships to escape the bay. It's the only military response of humanity that can destroy a tripod and is a great moment showing the valiant sacrifice of the military. Damn shame it wasn't in the movie.

That's why the Jeff Wayne musical is by far the definitive version.

I'm not usually one to get chills, but this fucking does it. Thunderchild is a fucking fantastic literary moment and it's a travesty that it's so often omitted or reworked too heavily in adaptations.
>>
>>83517345
It's a smart scene too, that hints at the inherent weakness of the Martians, despite their advanced technology, the HMS Thunderchild is successful mainly because the Martians have no experience with warships, since Mars has no oceans, and treat pretty much everything on Earth as inferior by default.

First they don't recognise it as a threat, then they try to kill it with chemical weapons, the most effective weapon they've had against all other human forces, then they finally realise it's a human version of their own fighting machines and melt it with their energy weaponry. They had the technology to overcome it easily all along, but their arrogance and lack of foresight meant that by the time they did apply their technology to the problem, it was too late.

You put your prey into a state of terror early on to make them easy to pick off one by one afterwards when they're all disorganised and terrified of you wiping them out the same way. Like Gorilla-poachers trying to catch some young ones. They make a huge ruckus causing the gorillas to flee, shoot the silverbacks to further the panic of the pack and then they isolate some of the fleeing gorillas and capture them.

Also because it happened in the book. Except in the book the Martians were actually vulnerable at that point and were just defending themselves as efficiently as possible from humans.
>>
>>83524450
>make them easy to pick off one by one afterwards when they're all disorganised
Wouldn't it be easier to pick them as they're packed and close by? It's not like the humans could do any damage to it as they're of solid (alien?) metal
>>
>>83524672
You're thinking small-scale. It wasn't about terrorising the people at ground zero. It was about terrorising humanity at large as they either see the aliens just disintegrate humans or hear the tales of it happening as the people left alive spread the tale.

A terrorised populace is less efficient at fighting back as they just want to run from the menace with a disintegration-ray, meaning that any armed uprising is less likely to work. I'm of course working under the assumption that the aliens were expecting humanity to fight back, like they did in the book.
>>
There's only 2 things wrong with this movie:

a) The cellar scene is a rehash of the kitchen scene from Jurassic Park, and the aliens look like ET

b) Jack Reacher takes down a Tripod with a grenade - Cloverfield Lane had a similar ending scene.
