Aren't most modern movies finished in 2K? 4K is overkill.

Older movies on film on theatrical "release prints" made from several generations past the master generally had a resolution slightly higher or lower than 720p.

1080p blu-ray is really all you need at the moment.

I think most big budget movies are shot at 4k or 8k now. Smaller movies probably stick to 1080p or so though.

I think most good releases make the transfer from the master so can make good use of the 4k. I'm sure some are like you said and not possible to work with the master though. Do you have any specific examples of movies where the film master is lost and you're going to get shitty quality from what's available? And I can't imagine that release prints would be that poor quality.
