I enjoyed spec ops, but they're those people that act like it's high art and every other shooter before it is a dumb power fantasy, which completely over looks all the shooters that came way before it that had similar themes but delivered in a less in your face way.

Spec Ops pretended really hard to be more than just another military shooter where you kill tons of brown people, but at the end of the day, thats basically all it was.
Nice graphics and soundtrack, i'll give it that, but the story was dumb, and the 'dramatic' moments that were meant to make it feel more mature just felt hamfisted.
Cramming a halfassed message about 'morality' in between shooting waves of brown people just doesn't work.
Its still worth a playthrough if you're bored though.

What's the difference between a 'genuinely convincing' and a merely 'convincing' atmosphere?
>>
>>83490579
In both those examples the mediums become slaves to the narrative, true filmic expression is more than just the emulation of theatre. Games have a much harder time being "pure" in their expression as in just something gamey and not an emulation of another medium.

A FUCKING CHILDREN'S VIDEO GAME
>>
Everyone who, despite being an "adult", is still so fucking insecure in their choice of entertainment that they automatically dismiss artistic mediums should fucking neck themselves.

No shit literature, music etc are at the top, they've been around for fucking centuries. When writing a book you literally only need a writing implement, while creating a video game requires a fuckhuge team of diverse disciplines. I agree most video games are utter shit, but so is most of everything. For every classic there's about 500 Twilight or other shit. Limiting yourself because of some arbitrary notions of high/lowbrow shit is just sad. It's also hilarous because I GUARANTEE you that most new art forms were dismissed when they were introduced. You think people thought movies were high art when they were introduced? You think TV shows were?

>>83493001
This is the most retarded thing I've read all day - you're saying that the title of the medium excludes it from being profound? Oh boy, I've found a retard. If you think that Bioshock is an RPG then you just haven't played any RPGs —it's that simple. If you want something traditional then I recommend Wizardry 8; it has classic gameplay, but it's also quite modern, so it won't confuse you. And there is literally no other game like it.
System Shock 2, Deus Ex; those two games are FPS/RPGs. Strife is considered a precursor to the hybrid-genre, and, although an RPG it ain't, it's still more 'RPG' than Bioshock.
Bioshock is a shooter, and it has upgrades, and magical abilities. Magical abilities are just additional weapons/tools. Upgrades are meaningless; CoD online has upgrades, and IIRC the Rainbow Six Vegas games have upgrades, F.E.A.R. has health upgrades, the Dark Forces, and the Jedi Knight games have upgrades. So many games have weapon or health or whatever upgrades.

I mean, video games don't need to prove themselves to be "deep" in a conventional way through story. Gameplay is what defines the medium, and while it's harder to express when talking about artistic merit, it's ultimately what makes video games worthwhile as a medium - if they just ape after movies, they're alsways going to be behind. I mean frankly, Deus Ex has a fucking retarded plot, but the gameplay is fantastic, and it also combines this with very coherent and interesting themes that underlines the whole game.

The entire point of the scene was to show how bloodthirsty the military can be. There's a difference between killing an enemy because it's necessary and killing an enemy because you get excitement outvof doing it. If you watch the Captain Willard's expression throughout the entire scene you'll see that he is disturbed by how much joy Kilgore is having destroying an entire village.

It's all completely correct though. I play video games, but they're quite clearly a mindless time sink. Even the best story-focused games don't hold a candle to the best film or literature. They're not even close.

I also think that it's fair to say that there are stronger works of art in other mediums, but vidya is a very young medium. Would you say that Little Nightmares is a mindless time sink? Or Journey? All you do in those games after all is walking around. Artistry is not unobtainable for video games due to the medium itself.

kek this is the same retarded logic weebs use when trying to posit anime as superior to film

it's pretty simple m8, the best video games that were name dropped ITT (Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, etc) are all clearly inferior to the films and literature they are a derivative of. can you honestly say Planescape's dumbed down lore is comparable to LoTR?

>>
>wahhh it's all opinoins!

It's not though. Video games are to film and literature what punk rock is to Beethoven. It is a simplification of a higher form of art, condensed for the masses and to sell as a product. All the "great" video games people talk about are essentially that, they're inspired heavily by certain books or films but instead of taking a step forward all they do is strip down their creative source and just push mediocrity meant to appeal to an audience that doesn't have the capacity to appreciate anything that doesn't force feed you its ideas.

Take for example the OP's pic, where Spec Ops just reduces the theme and philosophy behind Heart of Darkness down into a single repetitive idea that it keeps drumming over and over throughout the entire game.

Are you seriously implying video games are movies? Are you stupid?
>>
>>83493835
>I GUARANTEE you that most new art forms were dismissed when they were introduced
did you make a thread on /pol/ earlier?

I think what you're trying to say is that video games, as a medium, are comparable to other forms of art. But so far we don't have a single example to demonstrate this. It's possible that in a few decades it'l pick up more of a following from intellectuals, but right now video games are like comic books or toys. The greatest video games in existence can barely compare to a decent book.

Kojima was the only one redpilling the masses at the time MGS2 came out. I didn't understand what this monologue meant until I played it again a few years back. And it's more relevant now than ever with all this media bullshit going on.
>>
>>83496408
Frankly I think it's idiotic to value video games mainly for their storytelling in a traditional sense. It's comparable to valuing a movie, or music solely on the strength of its narrative. Its a unique medium, it has unique strengths.

Honestly, I can with all certainty say that video games will NEVER have a pure narrative that matches say, Gravitys Rainbow, Don Quixote, War and Peace or whatever, because translating such complex works into vidya simply doens't work, or would require such a massive scope and singular vision that it would never be made. But video games have the advantage of gameplay and immersion- that's why video games that have settings that are pretty derivative by literary standards, can still be incredibly engaging since you experience the medium in a completely different way. And it's fascinating, video games have been around for less than HALF a century - that's nothing, nothing at all! I think it's pretty fascinating to see a completely new medium develop.
>>
>>83496994
bait

Comparisons about the narrative aside, I think it's pretty fucking stupid how restrictive video gaming is with consoles

"Oh, you want to play this game? Fuck you! Buy my console to play it!"
>>
>>83493228

>>
>>83496825
Nah, I don't go to /pol/. And I agree, we don't have a <insert classic book here> yet, and it's going to be a long time until we do. But I see it like this - nobody attacks music for not having an incredible narrative depth, because we understand that we don't have to nessecarily enjoy the medium in that way. But games somehow need to prove themselves with a "narrative". This is a fault of the industry as much as anything else, and most AAA games have mediocre story AND gameplay.

>The greatest video games in existence can barely compare to a decent book.

Based on narrative, absolutely. But take Super Mario Bros. It's pretty old and basic, and it has no narrative to speak of. It is still an incredibly well-made video game, and a great gaming experience. The instant comparison to "BUT WHAT ABOUT LITERATURE" is so silly. I would never hear it about someone listening to, I don't know, whatever music you currently enjoy.
>>
>>83497027
no.
If you haven't played the game, I suggest you watch the video. I'm not saying it'll open your eyes or anything, but at the very least it's some interesting information to chew on.

This is how retarded it is to consider vidya and movies as the same medium, dipshit.
