The main problem with TFA was that it followed the Return of the Jedi formula, of "give them more of the same". It was after Lucas decided that movie audiences no longer cared about story, they cared about the spectacle. RotJ was largely a rehash of what people already liked from the previous movies, while ESB did something within the same universe.

As bad as the prequels were, at least Lucas backed off on the "story no longer matters" idea, though he depended too much on the spectacle still. He's just a shitty writer that struggles directing answers, and needed more people who would tell him "no" on certain things. He's got good ideas.

If TLJ and following movies just does more of the "give them more of the same shit they like", then the "main" Star Wars movies will ultimately fail.

I don't see how you can believe this, all the similarities are just surface level plot points and character designs lifted from and executed without any of the creative storytelling or world building of the original. the stuff taken from ANH is mediocre and is much better in the original.
BB8 is R2D2 but doesn't have a companion like threepio to play off of eachother and for some reason rey can speak and understand robot language, even though luke didn't at the beginning of ANH, oh yeah and how does she know how to do that? we know shes an orphan, who raised her? herself? she must be very resourceful.
Han solo fits the obi wan mentor character but he doesn't really have much to say except that all the stories and fables they heard about are true.
The macguffin doesn't tie into the climax of the movie like in ANH, instead the macguffin plotline is sidetracked by the climax and gets thrown in at the end as an after thought.
rey and finn have shit development and become friends one scene after they first meet. all the 'charming character moments' are vapid marvel quip tier nonsense that has no depth and reflection on the characters and no impression on the story.

Actually the movie does have world building. But that's not what makes star wars special. It's the characters. Their character development is shown throughout their interaction throughout the adventure. The choices they make. They are no different than the way they are developed in the original star wars. It's a movie that is well made and captures the magic of the OT. It has what the prequels lacked. That's why its successful. That's why I'm excited about the last jedi.

Looking back, I always thought Empire was the best, until I actually marathoned all the movies with my Dad in preparation for TFA

A New Hope is definitely the best, it has a great beginning, middle, and end. CHaracter arcs, memorable scenes that launched a franchise, and it's a refreshing twist on the classic tale of "Let's save the princess."

It's the best one, and unfortunately, each movie gets worse as they progress. They still have value in my eyes because of what they add to the overall mythos, but they do unfortunately deteriorate as they go on.
