You know what's kind of depressing? When Hollywood starts making retrospective, Vietnam-style movies about the Iraq war, the soundtracks will be full of early/mid-00's bro rock like Hoobastank and Trapt. Instead of Senator's Son playing as the choppers enter the frame, it'll be something like "GET UP, GET UP, GET DOWN WITH THA SICKNESS!"
>>
You know they've already made those right

>>
>>83454784
Not really. "Iraq war" films so far have mostly been political statements by directors. It takes more time for retrospective/nostalgia-tinged films to start emerging. Films like "Platoon" and Full Metal Jacket were released more than a decade after the fall of Saigon, and more than two decades after the war became big in the mid-60's.
>>
>>83454855

Don't think we'll ever get a proper "soundtrack" to the Iraq war like there is for Vietnam.

The number of soldiers who went to Vietnam vs the number of soldiers when went to Afghanistan/Iraq, then think about the number from Vietnam who made their way into the film industry, vs the number from Afg/Iraq that will make their way into the industry. There won't be as much of an influence from people who were actually there and experienced the war.

Also, I think Afghanistan will be looked back upon much more positively than Iraq. There is a tangible finish to that war with Osama Bin Ladens death. Afghanistan is still fucked up, but it's in much better shape then Iraq.

I thought that was one of the coolest parts about Generation Kill. When they start singing Teenage Dirtbag or even Let The Bodies Hit The Floor, it feels like an answer to the use of Rolling Stones in FMJ, or the darker, moodier rock songs in Vietnam films, that kind of stuff. But they're already self-aware. It's not an external soundtrack, the show has these long stretches of silence and they sing during moments of dullness to entertain themselves and remind each other where they come from. The guys sing these bullshit songs with irony, yet the show shows these moments with touching sincerity; it's the kind of cheesy shit that these guys really sang and bonded over, and it shows this generation -of the title- is just lost 18yos straight out of high school, playstation and MTV, that late nineties era where pop culture before 911 was so naive and disconnected from the reality of man's violence. Teenage Dirtbag, the title says it all, there's something ugly about it but it's not a cliché metal angry song, it's sang by this complete eye-glassed numale, a song about a nerdy beta orbiter hopelessly in love with the popular girl and daydreaming about prom, with the music video showing him getting cucked by the jock Chad, it's not about heroin abuse or grief or the nature of evil, the kind of stuff post-Vietnam bands sang about, and that immaturity and emotional disconnect thematically and tonally fits post-911 loss of innocence perfectly. A touch of genius.

I was in the Army from 2002 through 2008. If there isn't a scene of some 19 year old faggot getting weepy to Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" then it won't be true to Army life at the dawn of the 21st century.

Also my greatest fear is that I'll live to be the last veteran of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars and a bunch of future dicks will want to interview me.
