And while yes it's not some incredibly deep film you realize what kind of work went into it, yes? Villenueve actually had an entirely new language created just for the movie, the Heptapod's language is actually valid. While that doesn't hold up the movie on its own I don't see how you could call that dishonest movie making.

the human elements are great but they never properly mesh with the actual narrative of the film, which is especially rough since so much of the runtime is bogged down with tedious exposition (remember when they felt the need to explain, in three scenes in a row, that Louise can see the future now?). not to mention that the climax of the film is resolved through a ludicrous and easily avoidable deus ex machina.

No, the problem was the movie was plodding and visually uninteresting. Did the director forget to tweak the color palette? The whole movie looks like it's barely more colorful than black and white. The male character served absolutely no purpose in the story, and was literally only there to help facilitate a plot twist in the end that Amy becomes a mother in the future.
