The "show about nothing" thing has more to do with the fact that there's absolutely no sentimentality, no lessons learned, and no character development. Most sitcoms had to, and still feel the need to, include a bit of pathos or a heartwarming scene or a crappy moral lesson, but Seinfeld ignored all that.
