I think it was pretty great. Sure the cinematography is better than the story itself.

The skank has that nose I like.
>>
>>83381797
It was enjoyable. Watched it last night. It could have been shortened a bit but the ride was interesting enough that I didn't mind.

I kept hearing reviewers mention Lovecraftian elements but I'm a big fan and couldn't really see what elements they were talking about. Young guy gets caught up in something over his head maybe? That isn't really Lovecraftian though.
>>
>>83381935
Nah, it wasn't Lovecraftian. People these days see Lovecraft in everywhere, it was more like Polansky with a classic gothic tale underneath, which I think it's an odd mixture but interesting. Also the cinematography in this movie is GOAT.
>>
>>83381797
Bump.

>>83381797

>>
>>83383597

>>
It desperately needs a recut. It's much too long, and and entire portions could be cut without affecting the story. Overall, it's got some really amazing scenes and choreography, but it's terribly imperfect.
>>
What was the deal with the people that worked for the Doc? Were they all taking the blue shit too? Were they like the old nobility or something?

One neat thing I noticed but it didn't dawn on me until later. The police dude in the village had a lot of WW1 memorabilia hinting at how old he was. Nice touch.

Parts of it dragged but I think that was some of its charm. If people expect every film to be 1.5-2 hours it'll just limit creativity and force filmmakers to opt for instant gratification and shitty development.

I generally prefer longer films, but you have to justify it, and this movie didn't. Cut the entire bit between his being captured with the police and hooked up to the machines and what do you lose outside of a completely incomprehensible scene where the patients act like zombies for no reason? There are a lots of little things, too, that could be cut just to make the film tighter. A film can be ponderous and slow, but should never feel like it's dragging.
>>
>>83381935
>It could have been shortened
Defintely. It was a good film but after 30 minutes you already know whats gonna happen. It's 2 and a half hours long ffs. The last hour seemed to drag like fuck.

>>
>>83385243
Is it even a blockbuster though? I'd never even heard of it until the bluray came out.
>>
>>83385528

I would say so. It's a Verbinski movie and it received a wide release plus it was fairly heavily advertised.

By blockbuster I mostly mean something that appeared in basically every multiplex, I don't mean a studio tentpole like Wonder Women or something. It is very rare that a movie as strange and artistic as Cure for Wellness gets such a wide release these days. I'm really glad I got to see it in a theater the one week that it stayed in my city. It bombed pretty hard.
>>
>>83385528
>Is it even a blockbuster though?
Depends what you compare it to. Capeshit or movies made to draw in huge audiences that can make or break a studio? No. Psychological horror films? Kinda. Only budgeted 40m compared to something similar Shutter Island at 80m but that had Leo in it. I'd say for it's genre it's a decent budget but I'd not call it a blockbuster.
>>
>>83385832

What you've said is reasonable but read my above post for why I used the term "blockbuster." Especially since this movie is directed by a guy who traffics in blockbusters, ie. the POTC trilogy.
>>
>>83385475
>one twist
They weren't twists. They were obvious cues.

The movie literally tells you what's going to happen in the first 30 minutes.

Lower budget stuff is always better, because you're allowed to actually do something with it. He wouldn't even have been allowed to smoke if this were a $150 million picture

you're expecting action movie endgame and mindless fun. You missed the point of the film if that's what you wanted.

>>83394505
>He wouldn't even have been allowed to smoke if this were a $150 million picture

Earlier in the thread we established this as either a high budget psychological/horror film or a blockbuster that didn't earn well.

The smoking in this film served a very important purpose. And no, it wasn't just because of the lighter.
>>
>>83395104
>The smoking in this film served a very important purpose
Obviously, but they still wouldn't have let him do it if it were actually a blockbuster. Anything with a high enough budget must appeal to the lowest common denominator to earn its keep, and smoking is more of a taboo than sex these days.
>>
>>83395081

what about the first 2 hours of the movie failed to tip you off that it was B movie nonsense from "go"? it's very consistently over the top, and personally i love that Verbinski chose to roll with it instead of going with a cop-out downer/ambiguous ending like every other horror/thriller for the past 8 years.
>>
>>83404047
The thing about this movie is that the general population has all but forgotten about movies of this type and don't know how to react to them. It's an adult, pulpy thriller that balances its themes, plot, and characterization economically in service of being an entertaining movie. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, isn't concerned with appearing profound, yet still treats its audience and subject matter with respect. It's a throwback, a simple story told well that remembers that frivolity and quality can coexist and in 2017 that unfortunately makes it an anomaly that people have a hard time understanding because it can't be easily boxed in to the pre-packaged demographic machine.

i think the water with the eels in it has some magic powers and makes you live longer. but since it has toxic side effects ( teeth falling out) you need to filter it through people first and extract the "essence" of the water which we saw in the blue little bottles. so the baron, his staff and the cop used all the sanatorium patients as human filters for the magic water and basically lived for centuries consuming the filtered essence of the magic water.

this is pretty much it, except you missed the backstory.

the baron, staff, cop, nobles were doing this to peasants hundreds of years ago. someone found out, burned everything, cut the daughter out of the mother, threw her in the eel well.

but the baron survived, went into hiding, built this place as a modern equivalent. the "peasants" are now "peasants of the mind" who can be easily manipulated with this whole cure business.

finally, the baron's motivation for all this is to cure his daughter of her infertility, so he can marry her and continue his wretched line.

kek, this. i guess he can only enjoy that pussy for a few days. without the magic liquid from the blue bottles she'll probably start aging at lightspeed.
>>
>>83410143
It is never implied that all that postponed aging has been stored up somehow and will rush back all at once if they stop taking the eel water so she'll probably just start aging at a normal rate.
>>
>>83409618

There's nothing wrong withmaking something pretty to look at just for its own sake.

Does he skip leg day?
>>
I just finished watching this and it was the most boring shit ever.
He was good for the like first 40 minutes then he goes full retard.
>>
>>83409531
All you need to do is press a couple of buttons. It's not rocket science. She probably looked at it and figured it out. (Besides, they have instructions on the machine dipshit.) She's naive, not a moron.
>>
>>83415626
she's been locked up in a fucking castle since the 1700s
>>
I'd probably been more disturbed by the scares if I shared the director's obvious fear of writhing eels
>>
>>83381797
Actual decent movie, I staved off from watching it because the trailers made it look like a boring movie and shitty theme but turns out the trailer is nothing like the movie.
>>
>>83384481
Why doesn't she have eyebrows
>>
>>83415699
So?
Quit trying to make her out to be as stupid as you are.
>>
i guess we can agree that

and
>Mia Goth > Elle Fanning
>>

>>Mia Goth > Elle Fanning
Do not ever post here EVER fucking again

why did they drill a hole straight through his front tooth if they were just gonna pull it out anyway?
>>
>>83409618
you're fucking annoying. congratulations
>>
>>83419823
To be cruel
>>
>>83418450
yeah. lets compare utterly different movies. ill continue

Brimstone > Cure for madness > Neon demon
and
Dakota Fanning > Mia Goth > Elle Fanning
>>
>>83419823
it was not a drill
>>
>>83419823
So his spirit/soul could escape. The human spirit hides out in your teeth when it senses danger.
>>
>>83381797
So how did the girl teleport from wall to wall before that car crash?
>>
>>83420578
She used her bicycle.

To get there faster, not teleport
>>
>>83420692
Did she do sick jumps between the walls or were the walls connected? Because it didn't feel like they were connected.
>>
>>83420724
>castle walls aren't connected
Nigga do you even know the purpose of a castle?
>>
>>83381797
>businessmen roll up in the car
>looks over at the burning building
>"What did you do?"
I lost my shit at that part, I'm not sorry.
>>
>>83420798
>what are different layers
Also the castle was hundreds of years old with it also being burned down once. I'm pretty sure the walls aren't very pristine.
>>
>>83420858
>layers
Its a castle not a .psd

Also fire doesn't do shit to stone. What do you think fireplaces are made out of?
>>
>>83381797
While I was watching it, that part where he was creeping through the halls around the nurses made me think of a video game.
Overall I liked it enough to see it twice with two different groups of friends.
>>
>>83420977
>Also fire doesn't do shit to stone
Then how the fuck did the castle burn down in the first place?
>>
>>83421018
The interior and furnishings burnt. And maybe the floors, if they were wood.

You should already know how stone works - you're dense as fucking granite.
>>
post her tits
>>
>>83421111
>calls me dense
>defending some girl teleporting around when she shouldn't be able to
I doubt a wall from the middle ages would still be completely standing after like 700 years.
>>
>>83421202
No reason why it wouldn't. The wind isn't going to blow it over.
Don't be so American. You are embarrassing yourself without even realizing it.

Also it was obviously restored/maintained like the rest of the grounds.
>>
>>83421428
Alright whatever, but the teleporting is still bullshit. Also never call me an american again.
