Soundtrack was great......even though none of it was original

The cinematography was kinda non realistic with a lot of yellow hue which threw me off a bit.
Miles as always was a terrible actor but JK Simmons was amazing and for the most part captured that strict teacher role who goes at extreme ends to mould his student into perfection. I've had a music teacher like that and he was a bit like that but not anywhere near the level of extremity portrayed in the movie.
All in all it was an alright movie. The ending is overrated though I can't think of any alternative one which would suit the plot.

Should it have been? It's about jazz musicians, using real jazz compositions makes sense.
I thought it was a good choice that there was very little music in the film that wasn't literally being played by musicians. Gave it a more realistic feeling.
