I live on a ranch, we don't take off our shoes because at any given moment an emergency might arise: the cows escaped the corral, a brush fire, a broken irrigation pipe, etc. I understand Europeans aren't overwhelmingly agriculturally inclined, but I couldn' imagine someone taking off their shoes to enter a house, unless they're japanese. Theres also the threat of stepping on a scorpion or finding a poisonous spider one on the floor one might step on.

Doesn't really happen. Most people walk on the pavement here. There's usually a bristley rug or something to get rid of any debris in your shoes. If you went walking out in the mud in the forest or a field or whatever when it was wet you'd obviously just take them off and clean them like anyone else would.

And if you stepped in dogshit you wouldn't walk around in the house with it, would you?

I went around the house in my sockets becuase it was more comfortable but the rest of my family had shoes on, and I was constantly criticised for it as a kid because I could step on things. And if I inevitably did step on something they'd do the typical I told you so thing.
