Primer gets time travel right and everything else wrong. A well-crafted, complex plot alone is not enough to carry a movie.

I haven't watched Primer, but how does it solve certain issues of time travel such as:
>creating mass/energy from nothing (when you travel to a past time and there are two copies of yourself, you have added mass/energy to the past "universe" from nowhere)
>when traveling to a different time, you'd also need to travel to a widely different place: the surface of the earth moves at around 1000 miles per hour in its rotation, the earth revolves around the sun at around 67000 per hour, the solar system itself is moving, etc
>>
>>83347898
The "science" behind it doesn't matter. What's important is that the movie/show establishes the rules of time travel within their universe and then doesn't break them. Steins;Gate does this best I think.

Can we do the math down to a few feet of where the planet was thousands of years ago? I ask because to travel back in time you need to be within limits. Considering there may have been a structure, plant life, predator or fatal drop where you intend to land/appear.

it's one of the most stupid "mysteries" that's out there. everything can be explained properly and makes even more sense than some alien/yeti theory. Either they butterfly effect the shit out of everything by going back in time

everything they do leads up to the events that made them go back in time in the first place.

>>
>>83347788
There is no such thing as traveling back in time in reality, so how can you get it right in film?
>>
>>83347788
I gues this is the right thread.

Yesterday I found something. People always talk about how broken time travel is in Back to the Future, but I never saw this mentioned. And this is the ultimate plot hole:

So, when old biff traveled back in time to give young biff the sport calendar, he changed the future. When he got back to the future, he should have gone to OTHER future, the one with biff being rich and shit, and a future most probably without Marty and Doc being friends and him inventing the time machine. INstead, he gets back to the same timeline.

I mean, that's cheating...

>>
>>83359572
Well I dunno about that. Maybe it's just the way the dude who made it wanted it but it certainly could have used a bit more clarity. Like maybe important details not being mumbled in a completely offhanded way.

But that's half the appeal: rewatching it and catching stuff you didn't before.
>>
>>83359519
>he thinks you can travel to an alternate dimension with a different quantum signature like if you were taking a walk in the park

This is why no one uses time travel to change things. They would just create a different timeline but couldn't even access it themsleves (there's even the possibility that all alternate timelines already exist anyway and you're not even creating them).
>>
>>83359519
That's the Future Trunks theory of timetravel. Every time you time travel you create an alternate timeline.

You go back to your own because if those problems didnt exist you wouldnt have timetraveled in the first place.

Then you can make up any fantasy bullshit you like and it will be "correct".

With all story universes, all you need to do is have the stuff in that universe make sense in that universe. So, long as it has continuity, you can do anything you like. Unless, of course the lack of continuity is a plot point of the universe (Doctor Who is a good example of that.)

the only right way to do fictional time travel are multiple timelines.

Timeline A: guy builds time machine and goes back to kill Hitler

Timeline B: identical to A until the arrival of the time traveler from timeline A

even if he kills Hitler and and saves muh six gorillion in B, all those things still happen in the timeline he came from. he simply created a new one.
still iffy but at least no paradoxes.
>>
>>83361025
there are plenty of films and shows where characters behave in a reasonable way. ofc the less you know about them, the more freedom they have to do random things.

I found anime unwatchable because of this stuff though. whenever it is needed for the plot, the characters go 180 on everything they believe.
>>
>>83352749

I haven't watched show the show in years, but it just occured to me that Doctor Who is fucking godawful at time travel. It's basically there purely to dump the main characters in whatever story the writers came up with that day. Hell, one of the more famous villains' whole deal is that they "kill" people by sending them back in time, essentially killing them of old age. What the fuck is stopping the faggot Doctor from just zapping them right back with the TARDIS?

Fucking terrible show now that I think about it.

a cool concept would be an ancient alien spherical time machine that would only enable time travel within it - for as long as it existed, and only to a place where it was. so if humans decide to go back to it's earliest possible "date" they would go to an alien laboratory building it. if they go to the latest possible date forward they'd end up at the exact moment before the time machine breaks for some reason.

Not possible with Primer's time travel, which is why it's the only movie to get it right. But as >>83347892 said, it gets everything else wrong, so it's still a bad movie.

12 Monkeys is probably the least worst time-travel movie, as the time travel is only a little stupid.
>>
>>83362433
>Doctor Who is fucking godawful at time travel

Doctor Who is "sci-fi" in the same way Star Wars is "sci-fi". The sci-fi elements are purely decorative. The time travel is Back to the Future-tier, but it doesn't even have the great characters and pacing of BttF, so there is no redeeming value.
