Our world is filled with the people who died in their world, their world is filled with the people who died in ours. The sudden departure seemed random with no logic to who was taken because the criteria for who was taken is based on the people living in the parallel universe.

Imagine if you will, two realities intertwined. The very fabric of each one tied into the other, with the entire history of one being rewritten when a single person in the other dies. This intense interconnection creates interdimensional friction, the same friction that caused 2% of the population in both worlds to vanish, because that 2% were all about to die in various unconnected ways that would have caused incredible strain on the connection between both worlds, who is living and who is dying.

We can see this with Evi, in her eyes it was her entire family that was killed in the drone strike instead of her.

And in each world there are god figures who have somehow gotten mixed up with the interdimensional energy somehow. Because the population is getting so large and so many people die of unnatural causes every day it keeps putting more of a strain on reality which keeps trying to make both worlds full of people who died of any cause other than old age in the other world coherent and logical. This leads to some people not crossing over when they died and becoming demons that can go back and forth between the worlds (patty) despite being physically dead in our world, she can still manifest in the mind of someone from our world (kevin).

Kevin is actually like patty, because he committed suicide in the other world when he drowned himself in S2, but he only drowned himself in the alternate world and because this new world couldn't compute the fucking logic changes necessary to completely redo history it just cracked the ground open and as a side effect of this he was left like Patty.

so keep in mind that kevin is basically a more powerful version of patty. Patty is the way she is because she killed herself in our world, but the alternate world couldn't parse out a good reason for her to exist still in their world either so she was just sort of left halfway still in our world.

Kevin's like that except so much more powerful, as we've seen he has the ability to physically possess the bodies of people in the alternate dimension without realizing it.

The hotel is like the bizarro crossover between the worlds in a sort of way, where the internal logic of the universes decides who stays, who goes and so on and so forth. If you drink the water that means you permanently cross over to their universe.

Anyway this all comes to a head with the interdimensional demons from both worlds trying to manipulate people in the other world to destroy their world because they're afraid of the other universe existing and causing another departure

Patty is on the side of our world, hence she wants Kevin to nuke their world. David is in fact the Kevin's equal from their world- hence he calls himself god and came back to life, because he's just a visitor in our world from theirs. Remember he wasn't always "god" it only happened after he died.

After he died in our world, he went to their world but got fucked up somewhere along the way and became a permanent resident of their world but with his body still here in ours meaning that when he went back he "became god" because he can now travel between worlds at will.

Kevin is almost exactly like this, he is somehow simultaneously alive in both worlds at once and also able to possess the bodies of people who he is not. So anyway David tries to get kevin to stop the nukes but patty manages to get kevin to nuke the entire alternate reality which is too much for the interdimensional energy to handle all at once and it collapses onto itself, destroying the alternate world and saving ours

They're gone for good because the extra dimensional energy shit/god/whatever governs the rules between the two worlds was already strained, which is why the departure had to happen, they were probably all people who were going to die of unnatural causes and cause a bunch of logic problems

So since Kevin basically killed all of the alternate world at once, it was too much to actually compute and bring back to our world so in all reality probably what happened is after they died the entire alternate world departed

Kevin literally departed an entire universe full of billions of people. And there was no danger of a flood, just a danger of one of their guys taking over the mind of our president and making him nuke us

Old Nora happens because kevin leaves, finds Nora before she can get incinerated and they run off to live alone together. His father and friends are just left with his clothes like jesus so they create a religion around him and when old nora is asked if she knows kevin, it's actually a religious question like: have you head of jesus and kevin is still alive and living with her in hiding from all the religious people who think he's gone to heaven
