Kurosawa's 'Stray Dog' is the OG cop-kino. Kitano's 'Violent Cop' is very good for a directorial debut and feels 100% Kitano from the start. 'Fireworks' is good too but isn't a cop movie despite the protagonist being one. I'm also one of the only people in the world who will recommend watching Mamoru Oshii's entire 'Kerberos' trilogy. 'Jin-Roh' is loved by everyone but 'The Red Spectacles' and 'Stray Dog' are completely unknown to most. They're slow and strange movies but if you're looking for something different and don't mind unconventional storytelling I'd absolutely recommend them.

Every Takeshi Miike kino is worth a try. I've never understood one of his movies but I've also never felt like I had wasted my time.
