i fucking love Apocalypse now but it's hardly what I was thinking of when saying 'war movie'.
The only reason Apoc Now was set in Vietnam was because it was an adaptable/transferable enough setting that worked with the source material (heart of darkness) and I imagine Coppola wanted to add undertones of his own personal politics throughout it
