So why did Marv turn into a skeleton?
It was a point about American healthcare. If you receive any workplace injury in America, you may as well be dead if you're poor.

When Marv became electocuted his outer form was no longer stable. Every nerve in his body was writhing in electical impulses, impulses so strong they broke through his skin layer. For a split second the effect was so strong his true form was revealed, however it does not last long because overexposure of the skeleton can lead to exetreme paranoia in viewers, additionally if he did not return to his original Marv state he would be confined to spend the rest of his days as a skeleton.

Home Alone is a remarkable introspection into the horrors of skelephobia, throughout the films we can see Kevin's fear turn to torment. Take for instance the poster, it is of Kevin screaming. While it is implied that Kevin is scared of the intruders, if you inspect the film to its core you find something very different. He is infact screaming of what lies beneath Marv and Harry, he fears their skeletons.
Now you may not believe me, but just think about it. Buzz's spider is a classic symbol for fear, but by the end of the film Kevin has learned to utilise it. He has utilised his fear as a weapon. In other instances of the film we can learn about how skeletons, good or bad, are nothing to be afraid of. The old man who Kevin fears most is a skeleton, the pigeon lady is a skeleton, hell even the pigeons are skeletons. Kevin's revelation about this is what the films are truly about, all of us are skeletons, walking slowly to our graves. Under the skin we are all the same, Kevin simply tries to rid Marv of his sins that lie on the surface, Marv's skeleton form is his true form and Kevin wanted to reveal that. The writers wanted to show the audience that no matter how spooky we would all have to come to terms with being a skeleton just like Marv.
