Every single astronaut there is has been trained as something else before becoming an astronaut. All the shit like piloting, docking etc. is taken care of by military people. Astronaut training is basically learning how to do what you normally do in low or zero-gravity conditions. Which is why you don't se astronauts who suddenly complete their PhDs in microbiology, but see microbiologists who become astronauts.
