What is it with /tpg/ fetishizing the "normie" and their supposed anger/disappointment at the series?

Theory's I have.

The thing in the glass box is the doppleganger of the statue in the Black Lodge.

Spooky disappearing man in the jail cell was a Black Lodge being feeding off of the principal. He left because he knew he could make no headway since the principal is in jail.

The woman that Cole thinks should see Coop is definitely Dianne.

Albert knows more than Cole.

Laura ascended and went somewhere else. She literally floated away and then we saw a white horse. She's left the black lodge.

There was more but I'm tired and I've forgotten
>>
I really hope Dern's character is introduced next episode, whether it's Diane or someone else.
>>
>>83253254
the green screen in the carsick scene looks fine, it does it's job, what the fuck are you guys talking about
>>
>>83253096
effects fags, it's intentional.

BUF who did effects for Fight Club, the Matrix sequels, Avatar, Thor 1, the upcoming Blade Runner and hundreds of commercials and music videos is doing the effects for twin peaks.

they are trying to match Lynch's 90s-00s short films and commercials lo-fi aesthetic, all the way back to his handmade Eraserhead.

you are all fucking morons who can't wrap your head around that.

Is this scene explained in the missing pieces or am I a dumbo for not understanding it in FWWM? I thought the point of that scene was to just show how dark and crazed Laura could get.
>>
>>83253096
In the beginning of FWWM the two fbi agents aren't real. They are a dream that coop is having, when desmond reaches for the ring and he disappears, Coop goes to talk to Cole about a dream he has had.

She was such an amazing actress in FWWM. The only other film I've seen her in was some horse shit vampire movie with Alec or Stephen Baldwin
>>
>>83253365
The scene works in the theatrical cut, though there was a cut plot thread about the cocaine they got was actually baby laxative which leads to a better scene of Laura at Bobby's house. It's not about Laura being dark and crazed, it's just her being drunk and high as fuck and getting Bobby into things way over his head while not really caring.
>>
>>83253323
Holy shit, so it's confirmed next level then

>>83253301
Seeing as Doppelganger's are more of a thing than ever since this reintroduction, I bet Laura Palmer will have some sort of Doppelganger walking around in the real world. That in turn could further tie in to "see you in 25 years"

The guy who runs BUF or used to run BUF is/was close friends with Michel Gondry ( i don't follow what Michel or BUF do anymore so I'm not aware if its the same guy or not), and does all the effects for his movies.

Michel Gondry's whole current style is everything has to look cheap or handmade visually.

So it's 100% meant to look cheap.

If you haven't you should watch Persona (Bergman) and The Trial (Wells). Also probably some French surrealism from the 20s. Some of Cronenberg's movies are like this too.

>>
>>83253323
>BUF who did effects for...

Explain to me why this matters at all? They still have to work with a budget right? You don't just hire them and they put out the same quality work they did on other films.

That said, I do think there's something intentional to it, either that or the budget allocation is just such that they put more effort into what Lynch considers important and less for other stuff.

For example Laura taking her face off was a great visual effect, whereas the smoke coming out of Dougie's head was less so.

>>
>>83253578
Because I bet BUF is doing the show for free or nearly free. David Lynch is a cinema god in France. At least half of his stuff is produced by French producers because they love him so much.

Since BUF is close to Michel Gondry, they are really into surrealism and arthouse directors to begin with.

I'm 100% convinced it is intentional, not decided if I still like it. I loved the gray spirit because it felt so otherwordly, it wasn't some Marvel cinematic universe, I just learned blender, volumetric smoke particle monster.

Also one could argue that the "offness" of certain effects make them seem less tangible and real in how the spirit world would seem to humans. Would a ghost in the real world be a fully shaped entity with depth and magical wispy particles swooshing around or just a flat thing that would stick out like a sore thumb from the mortal world.

I haven't decided if I like some of that stuff either, it's oddly unrelatable. If you watch Eraserhead, you know what you're getting into and the practical effects while aged look great for what they are and their purpose. It's an established aesthetic.

CG within the mainstream has never really tried to be anything other than as realistic as possible, so when something like pic related comes around, it's really hard to know what to make of it. It looks jarring, it's a weird aesthetic that you haven't really seen anywhere, especially not in something shot with such crisp and clear cameras.

Clearly they could do better, there's so many other options to how to make this scene and how to play it out, but the movement of the brain-matter-flesh-blob thing after it rots intentionally moves about in an off-putting and irregular manner. I mean I just can't accept that it wouldn't be intentional, because anybody on that team at no additional cost whatsoever could have animated that in less "abrasive" style.

It's just hard to know what to make of it so far. Might be ahead of its time, might just be something that looks bad and doesn't contribute anything to the overall aesthetic. I don't know how I feel yet, but I think we're in for a lot more of this type of stuff in upcoming episodes.

I love how completely fucking confused Jeffries is in that scene, he has absolutely no idea what's going on and just screams in futility, exhaustion and terror.
>>
Just finished reading the Cooper autobiography and I'm a little confused about what it means for the rest of the series. Was the man in Cooper's dreams as a kid BOB? Why would he be getting visions of him when he has no association with Twin Peaks initially?

Well... yes. I'm familiar with Lynch so I understand his sensibilities and intentions. If I just watched some show and had no context for it whatsoever and it looked bad, I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought.

Are you saying intellectualizing the process is dumb? I'm not arguing with you that it looks "good", I'm arguing for just how intentional the aesthetic is and whether or not it ends up contributing to the show.

If a less artistic show had CG that looked like this, of course I would laugh at it, because it wouldn't be intentional, it would just be their complete failure at creating something believable with computer graphics, but this could be less abrasive and intentionally chooses not to, surely that means something.

The Black Lodge/Waiting Room is outside of the normal progression of time. So Cooper is trapped in it at some point and it's not out of the question that this could have affected him earlier before any of this happened. Just like Jeffries knew that Cooper would be possessed/replaced by a doppleganger in FWWM.

It doesn't. He is just putting as little effort into the effects as he can because truly good effects work requires you to be planning right from before the camera starts rolling. Lynch (at least since IE) just prefers to do everything in the editing room. He's no doubt also discovered that paying bottom dollar for every effects shot also makes the studio less likely to be adverse to wild concepts that would be difficult to realize under a more stringent work ethic.

It means you can put whatever is in your head directly on screen but like the Lucas' prequels that's not always a good thing.

They dont have a defined 'sound' like other bands and shift thier members/sonic aesthetic so frequently that they have SOME material that almost anyone in to music will appreciate.

We know Cooper isn't genuinely pure. He fucked up big time in the past by falling in love with his partner's wife which ended up getting her killed. He also failed the coffee test in the waiting room in the final episode and was sentenced to the Black Lodge.

>Hawk: Cooper, you may be fearless in this world. But there are other worlds. Worlds beyond life and death. Worlds beyond scientific reality.
My people believe that the White Lodge is a place where the spirits that rule man and nature reside. There is also a legend of a place called the Black Lodge. The shadow self of the White Lodge. Legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow self. My people call it The Dweller on the Threshold.
But it is said that if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.

>>83255577
>Like I said, at no additional cost, effort
You're absolutely wrong. Tweening a 2D image to fly across a screen is supremely easier than animating the CG in 3D. That extra effort needs to paid for regardless of how the studio feels about the man who hired them, and Lynch clearly isn't willing to pay for anything beyond what fulfills his vision on a conceptual level.

That's likely a conceptual requisite Lynch had for the effect, since he seems to do it a lot to convey the traversal of dimensions.
>>
>>83255834
>>83255918
>failed the coffee test in the waiting room in the final episode
I'm pretty sure that was just a surreal way of Lynch saying that the Red Room is just between the Black Lodge and the White Lodge
we see it in a solid state, frozen, then a liquid state and then a state that's in between
Twin Peaks is a town between two mountains and the red room is between the Black Lodge and the White Lodge

Also, Coop's soul wasn't completely annihilated and he had imperfect courage due to the fact that he had to save Annie who will never be brought up ever ever again

Season 2 was pretty inconsistent, even before the killer's reveal, I remember the first time I saw the premiere, it suddenly felt like the show had a different tone, it got way darker and much more surreal off the bat. This is not something the other tv writers could keep up with when Lynch stepped away from directing episodes which lead to a more obvious discrepancy between Lynch and the show. Butthurt. Even adding in the streaming numbers that is fucking low. I was proving a point about "normies" not watching it.

Coop chose the wrong girl.

the right girl is Diane

Well I mean the studio is BUF which are pretty top, so it makes no sense for Lynch to hire the top if he doesn't consider vfx of any importance.
>>
>>83256434
I sure wasn't expecting normies to even hear about it, nevermind watch it. It is effectively a sequel to a 25 year old TV show, and it's impossible to make sense of it without watching a good deal of the series first. People that expected it to be some big ratings monster were delusional, but I do think it'll be a pretty decent cult hit (outside of the existing fanbase) once box sets and shit come out.

Why are you so obsessed with normalfags anon? It happened. Enjoy it,

Because it was spammed to death before and after the show aired. Normies BTFO etc...

Because they aren't. BUF is nothing compared to an actual top notch effects house like ILM or Weta.

If you actually watch the credits of something like Avatar or Life of Pi you'll notice studios can employ a dozen or more VFX producers, and a studio like BUF will be a footnote with a few names under it because they worked on a couple of effects shots in the film. In fact if you look on their website half of their Avatar work (two shots!) didn't even make it into the theatrical film.

Lynch picked them precisely because they're low key and probably work for cheap.

WHICH MOVIE!?!

Anyone see "Gogglebox" with Twin Peaks on it?

Swans are a bit like Pink Floyd - decent early albums and then never-ending stream of regressive garbage that brought them real fame. Funny how fanbases hate each other despite being equally autistic.

This was my thinking too, that it's just meant to look oldschool.

>He is just putting as little effort into the effects as he can

No. Lynch has become dadaist a while ago, he doesn't care about photorealism in special effects. You seem to think he should approach VFX like some George Lucas's disciple or something. This isn't what Lynch is about. Since his catastrophic experience on Dune he has completely gave up on state of the art vfx. It's like you want him to paint like Vermeer but his thing has been cubist collage for more than 2 decades now.

You want to believe it's laziness and economic cheapness on his behalf? be my fucking guest. For the rest of us it's blatantly untrue. The man makes stylistic choices and that's it.There is no hidden agenda here. It's simply one of the last cinema true artist doing his thing as he always has. He got funds, he has producers outside of hollywood and america, if he wanted to pay for "better" vfx he clearly could.

You'll note that he is working with French Buf Studio on S3 of Twin Peaks. He's not working with an inexperienced amateurish cheap studio. But he's working with people he knows and appreciate who understand him and what he wants much better than ILM or Weta ever could.

You don't like him or his work that's ok, Lynch isn't for everyone. But don't come here pretending to know how and why he works the way he does because quite clearly you are not familiar with him or his work imo.
