David Goyer's pitch from 2004.

>Barry Allen sacrifices himself to save Keystone City from a malfunctioning machine created by the Turtle to steal his speed and bestows his power to his nephew Wally West. Barry's best friend Hunter Zolomon is crippled in the explosion.

>Wally's aunt Iris wants him to become the Flash, but Wally is afraid of ruining Barry's legacy and only uses his power for personal gain until an evil speedster known as "Zoom" shows up, breaks the Turtle out of jail and helps him rebuild the speed-stealing machine.

>Zoom reveals himself to be Zolomon, who believes Wally doesn't deserve to be the Flash and is angry Barry didn't choose him instead. He was artificially given speed by the Turtle and has become addicted to it.

>Zoom and Turtle kidnaps Iris and Wally's girlfriend Tina McGee to lure Wally into a trap. Wally gets trapped in the Speed Force trying to escape from the machine and meets Barry, who has been trapped there ever since his death and gives Wally what's left of his speed so Wally can escape.

>Zoom goes insane, kills the Turtle and fights Wally to steal his speed, but dies from stealing more speed than his body can process. Wally then vows to rescue Barry from the Speed Force.

Ryan Reynolds was slated to play either Barry or Wally in the movie, which Goyer was also going to direct. Goyer said he was drawing inspiration from Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" movies and "Batman Begins" and even brought an MIT consultant to make sure superspeed was depicted as scientifically accurately as possible, but WB kept delaying production and demanding rewrites and Goyer eventually dropped out.

Chris Brancato's pitch from 2007.

>Wally is a juvenile delinquent who hates the Flash without knowing that he's Barry. He also has a crush on Barry's assistant Linda Park, who is dating Detective Hunter Zolomon. Barry dies in an explosion at the crime lab and Wally gets doused with chemicals.

>Wally becomes an douchebag motocross pilot. Iris, who has become a senator, is killed in a suspicious lightning storm that also activates Wally's powers. Wally finds out Barry and Iris were killed by Vandal Savage, an immortal conqueror masquerading as the city mayor. Zolomon is working for Savage and set off the explosion that killed Barry, while Savage used a weather machine to cause the storm that killed Iris.

>Wally finds out that Savage is planning to use the machine to wipe out the human race and rebuild it to his image and travels back in time to train with Barry. He then becomes the Flash and stops Savage.

>Zolomon is arrested for his crimes and Wally gets together with Linda. He then decides to honor Barry's legacy by becoming the new Flash.

Shawn Levy was slated to direct the movie after Goyer dropped out with a new rewrite from Brancato. Scott Porter was named as the studio's favored choice to play Wally.

Levy eventually dropped out and WB decided to focus on the "Justice League: Mortal" project from 2009 that'd be directed by George Miller and come up with a Flash spin-off out of it.

>Batman creates a spy-satellite called "Brother Eye" to monitor Earth's superheroes, which is hijacked by his old flame Talia Al Ghul and corrupt businessman Maxwell Lord.

>Lord and Talia target Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter with nanotech-based weapons, forcing them to retreat to Superman's Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic, where Batman alerts them about the conspiracy.

>Barry and Wally find out Lord is the sole survivor of a secret government program that experimented on children with psychic abilities and and wants revenge on Earth's heroes for not protecting him.

>The heroes confront Lord, who mind-controls Superman into nearly killing Wonder Woman, forcing Batman to break his neck. Lord's mind merges with Brother Eye and unleashes a nanovirus that'll turn everyone on Earth into a hivemind controlled by him.

>The heroes battle Lord's army of robots. Barry taps into the Speed Force and transverses the world at the speed of light, removing the nanobots from every person on Earth and sacrificing himself in the process. Superman then destroys Brother Eye.

>The heroes decide to form the Justice League and Wally adopts the mantle of the Flash to honor Barry's legacy.

Adam Brody was going to play Barry alongside D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as Green Lantern, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Hugh Keays-Byrne as the Martian Manhunter, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord and Teresa Palmer as Talia.

Anton Yelchin and Zoe Kazan were in talks to play Wally and Iris, and David Dobkin had been lined up to helm the spin-off, but the whole project fell apart because of the Writer's Strike.

Greg Berlanti & Marc Guggenheim's pitch from 2011.

>Barry Allen develops superspeed after being struck by lightning and doused in chemicals and is mentored by Eobard Thanwe, the wheelchair-bound CEO of S.T.A.R. Labs. Barry is in love with his childhood friend Iris West, who is engaged to banker Nathan Newbury.

>Barry and Iris join forces to stop Leonard "Cold" Snart, a serial killer who has been terrorizing the city. Nathan almost gets killed by Snart and confesses to Iris that he laundered money for all of Cold's previous victims in investments related to S.T.A.R. Labs. Iris breaks up with him.

>Barry finds out that Thawne is the Reverse Flash, his nemesis from the future who travelled back in time and killed Barry's mother when he was a child, accidentally trapping himself in an alternative timeline.

>Thawne has built a particle accelerator to steal Barry's speed and create a singularity that'll destroy the timeline, allowing Thawne to return to his own time. Barry defeats Thawne and traps him in the Speed Force and then unravels the singularity, saving the universe.

>Barry and Iris get together and Barry becomes the Flash. Barry later meets Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who wants to recruit him to the Justice League.

This version was supposed to be in the same continuity as Ryan Reynolds' "Green Lantern", back when DC thought it was their answer to "Iron Man" and a modern day "Star Wars", and Reynolds was supposed to make a cameo appearance.

Berlanti was going to direct it, and Ryan Gosling, Chris Pine and Bradley Cooper - three actors that WB had previously approached for Green Lantern - were heavily rumored for the role.

Once "Green Lantern" flopped, Warner pulled the plug on the whole thing, and Berlanti retrofit the script to create the CW TV show.

Warner sounds like a nightmare to work with.

Why does there have to be a villain as well as other superheroes in a Flash movies?

A guy developing magical powers is interesting enough for the first movie, isn't it? I'm sure that would come with its own challenges not requiring a "reverse flash" or anything similarly stupid and lazy. How about if he has to figure out how to run fast without the field surrounding him annihilating all matter it encounters?
