>Hackers can hide computer viruses in online video subtitles and use them to take control of computers, security experts have warned.

ILLEGAL FILE-SHARING DEGENERATES BTFO

GOOD LUCK I HAVE NORTON
>>83195063
Seriously, how could you feasibly embed a virus in this?
>>83195274
the space between the words
>>83195274
EASILY IF THE PLAYER CAN BE MADE TO EXECUTE CODE IN ANY FILE WITH A SUBTITLE EXTENSION
ITS PROBABLY MULTICOLORED SJIS KARAOKE SUPPORT THAT THE PLAYER IS SO PERMISSIVE ABOUT
WEEBS DID IT AGAIN
NOOOOOOOOOO
This can't be happening, bros.
We're fighting against the system like Netflix and the Jews, we're supposed to be in control here!!!!!!!!!!!
>>83195274
That's not all SRT files contain. We need to go deeper.
>>83195063
>>implying srt files could harbor functional viruses
That's what I was thinking. I don't see how vobsubs would be vulnerable either.
>>83195736
NSASPLOIT.EXE.ASS
THERES PROBABLY NO SANITY CHECKING ON SUBTITLE FILETYPES AT ALL
what a crock of shit
it's just to scare people into not downloading
>>83195305

Wouldn't that just print text to the movie?
They just want to scare you
They lie
>>83194577
Arent most players already patched?
Don't people get fucked if they used VLC or other stream capable player?
>>83195305
>>83195387
Why don't media-players just read the plaintext?
>>83195595
I'm pretty sure anything else would show up as garbage text if opened in notepad
>>83194577
you can get computer viruses, botnets, worms, whatever from downloading illegal torrents from filesharing sites? you don't say...wow that is news.
Get the file from a semi-reputable source, like open subtitles. Use a media player like mpc-hc, which doesn't have special access to your OS, unlike windows media player, which can run scripts that will fuck you up. Finally, open the file to see what's in it. Problem solved.
I want to put a virus in a subttitle file. Is there a HowTo wiki page?
>>83196099
THE PATCHES MAKE THEM CHECK THE FILES BETTER, BUT THERES LIKELY MORE TO COME
SANDBOX JAIL VIRTUALIZE YOUR PLAYER THEN NONE OF IT MATTERS

literally no reason to not be using a safe language like Rust in 2017

But you can't embed an executable in the srt. Players like MPC and VLC open an srt file, they wouldn't automatically open an extension. And all modern Windows and Linux boots will warn you before you run any exe, so the only person you have to blame for letting that shit install is yourself.
This is paranoia mongering to scare people out of downloading shit. I have tons of subs from opensubs and have never had any problems.
SHIT!
All my anime has hard coded subs SO I CAN'T DELETE THEM!!!111!
>>83199179
ANNNNNNNNNNND its all on CD-Rs SO I CAN'T EVEN DELETE THE WHOLE VIDEO FILE!!!!!
WHAT DO I DOOOOOO?
just update your VLC player
they've already fixed this issue
>>83199289
Updates are a meme. I've been using the same version of Quicktime since 1997 and my machine is just fine
>>83195778
Then it would be vulnerability in the media player(s) themselves and not the srt/vob or what ever format you're using.
>>83196389
It's fucking VLC. Nothing to worry about then. And an overflow issue as well, ahahahahah.
wtf i hate over 10 years of downloading torrents and never getting a virus because i check the torrent for file types now
im #paying4Content now

They're probably refering to those obvious malicious subtitle files that come in a .zip format or anyother non subtitle format. There is absolutely no reason to compress a single text file, so you'd have to be tech illiterate to choose a .zip file. Most likely they contain a malicious program that is activate upon extraction.
