Again, I don't think Emmit went there to kill Ray. He wanted to reconcile. But the motivation for reconciling was more extrinsic than it was intrinsic- I genuinely don't think Ennis Stussy's murder had much to do with it because, again, Ray and Nikki weren't above robbing him, so it wouldn't surprise him that Ray would hire someone to try and rob or kill him.

In that sense you could make an argument that it was survival too. The argument playing back in his head when the cops mention the murder is jsut a sign that Emmit is seeing the connection between their feud and the negative impact it is having on his life in that moment. Whether that impact is emotional towards him or not, it is having a physical, possibly legal impact.

I'm not disregarding that fact. I've mentioned multiple times that that could refer to different aspects of why that takes him aback. I reserve that it has less to do with how he perceives Ray feels about him and more about survival- both physical survival and his business survival.

There are multiple things happening there that are worth considering. For instance, I genuinely don't believe he would've been as motivated to see Ray if he learned about the murder from someone other than the cops. He still might have gone, but maybe without the stamp.

Then there wouldn't be a point in showing the whole death scene and another minute of Emmit's reaction to it. He was almost completely frozen, slowly moving way from his brother as his brother reached towards him. Instead of doing anything remotely helpful- getting a wrap to help slow the bleeding, calling an ambulance, covering up the wound after his brother becomes unconscious and can't hold the wound anymore- he backs away and stares.

If he truly wanted Ray alive, if his only motive was reconciliation, he would've done something even if that something was completely futile. But the other aspects of his life, he knew, would be slightly easier if Ray was gone. There was some part of him that wanted him dead, even if his intention going over there wasn't murder.
