As an adult, it was similar to a giant facehugger except it didn't hug his face, it just injected like the snake did earlier in the movie.

The black goo is the basis of Engineer/Space Jockey biotechnology. In the same way that computers and computer programs are the basis of human technology.

It's a mutagenic substance that stores instructions which are then executed in the form of spontaneous mutations when the goo comes in contact with living organisms. The black goo was a tool. Like most tools, it can be dangerous to the uninformed. So when the human crew in Prometheus started chugging the stuff and splashing it on each other, it naturally turned out poorly for them. In their stupidity, they declared it a weapon. In their specific cases, they were wrong. It would be like if someone who knew nothing about humans or our culture wandered into a zoo and climbed into Harambe's pen. They might see how dangerous Harambe was and ignorantly declare that we must be keeping gorillas as attack animals to use in war.

This is not to say that the black goo cannot be weaponized. Considering how useful and pervasive it is within Engineer technology, it's likely they used it as weapon, the same way we use computers and programs to guide our missiles.

That's not to say they're not benign.
We don't know what David said to the Engineer.
But we do know that David cannot be trusted because he frequently acts against human interests while obscuring his intentions.

The Shaw/humans had no way of know what the Engineer's motivations were.
In her panic, Shaw brazenly declared that the surviving Engineer was going to immediately fly to Earth (again, trusting David's word) and kill everyone (based on a bad 1st contact, thanks to David). She is an unreliable witness and should not be believed.

I have a theory that the Spore pods on Engineer Planet X were the original origins of the Black Goo. David says the Goo affects meat only, not plant life.

Maybe the engineers were on this planet to cultivate and extract the spores in order to produce the weaponized goo? Hence why the ship was set to return to this planet, and not the Engineer homeworld.
