The troubles were bad enough with the British Army and Loyalists killing over 1,000 civilians, nevermind that, they also got spies/double agents into the IRA and orchestrated many atrocities in England, their own country, yes British spies in the IRA planned some of the worst bombs to give the IRA a bad name. They also fucked up the warnings that the IRA gave in the hope that the IRA would kill civilians. Its a small loss for them if a few civlians die and they win the wider war. And now in 2017, the IRA didnt kill anywhere near the number of civilians than the loyalists and army killed in the same period, but they are always brought as terrorists.

Neither Britain or Eire wants them because roughly 50% of the population thinks they belong in the other country, so neither side could take over without half the country kicking off.

As it is, Britain has more resources for policing than the Republic but the North is still a net loss to them.
