I unironically love Top Gun. Personally, I think if they do it well, and Trump doesn't somehow accidentally put us into a foreign policy bromance with Russia, there could be a follow up that plays off of Cold War tensions as well as pilot quality decline (in this case due to dependence on drones) which justifies Maverick to be there in the first place. It'll depend on how they use him. If they use him like Tom Skerritt in the original, then it'll depend on who plays the Maverick/Goose and Ice Man of this one. I love the prospect, but am not completely on board until I start getting signs it isn't going to cheap abuse of the IP. I think if they went money in the vein of Wall Street Money Never Sleeps, and less Kingdom of the Crystal Skull it could turn out all right. I don't think Cruise would do it if it was gonna be complete trash.

It's totally a possibility, but I think Maverick would have kept in touch with them throughout their lives. I think Maverick would have had too strong a relationship with them to be able to be harsh enough the distance brings. Ice Man and Mav learned to respect one another, though, and while they could have had Ice Man be shot down in Afghanistan or Iraq, it might feel too on the nose to have Kilmer have died the way Maverick's did. Mav could still have a similar relationship with Ice Man that Jester had with Mav's Dad. I think it just parallels a bit more poetically.

I not so lacking in self-awareness that I can't say I've watched Top Gun more than anyone ever should, nor do I spend my spare time conceptualizing Top Gun lore, but I do know that microcosm ridiculously well. Fast forwarding the tape organically, while trying to include fan service, parallelism, and modern day relevance isn't too taxing. It really is a shame Tony Scott isn't able to direct it though. I don't even know who to look at for someone to replace him.
