Ryuhei Kitamura is a great director and that's arguably his best movie. Amazing low-budget horror-action movie. It reminds me a bunch of the old Sam Raimi Evil Dead 1 and 2 style.

I've always loved animated movies: Plague Dogs, Heavy Metal, Watership Down. I think the movie Felidae is my favorite in this category. Alongside these movies "Fantastic Planet" is often recommended. There's no plot, it's just a succession of things happening.

Example: the kid steals a book on falconry because he can't get a library card. But the film already went to great lengths to establish that he's a skilled thief, so there's no tension or character development. It's like watching a documentary.
