It was supposed to be a full-on depressing ending showing how quickly one bad event can slide you back into a lifestyle you were trying to leave, but they cut the scene at the end where Edward Norton shaves his head while looking angrily into a mirror, so it just looks mindless.

Yeah they really fucked up by letting Norton do that.

If they wanted an ambiguous ending they should have ended with him in the bathroom shirtless looking at his tattoo and contemplating his life like in the earlier scene, but this time there's some clippers sitting in front of him.

Or something like that
