His background is as a surrealist painter. He's fused that style with narrative filmmaking, but it's still a part of his system. You don't expect surrealist visual art to make literal sense. That's not what it's trying to do.

I am thinking that the people that get butthurt about it are the type that can't sit and watch a show truly focused or have all of these thoughts and distractions in their heads. Or do other things when they watch shows or movies. Lynch's shows can get people antsy with the pacing between parts of dialogue or a scene and the bizarre things he puts in his work and Twin Peaks. A lot of things Lynch has said he puts in off the cuff but there is an interesting relationship and actually quality relationship or symbol that develops a lot from these. And a lot of it, and the central stuff, has many good symbols in it that are intended.

His works and Twin Peaks are meant to be disjointed to show the many meanings for different symbols and also to find more.

The better comparison is that it was well beaten by both American Gods & The Leftovers on the same night. They're both "prestige" shows that you could trot out the "Everybody just streams them!" line about but when the live audience is doubled for those its a bad sign.

They only had 440k for the on demand/streaming service anyway so even combined with the cable viewers it still didn't beat Leftovers cable audience.

You faggots are a bunch of blind followers of Lynch who won't accept that "Twin Peaks: The Return" is a total disaster. This is the final proof that rebooting old series is a really *really* bad idea, since not even Lynch can do it right.

TPTR is not Twin Peaks: it's a bland, sad, and pathetic attempt of self-celebration in the form of an artificial continuation of an unfinished old work. So old that you, the creator, can't even remember correctly. Ironically, at a metalanguage level, the topics of this reboot perfectly reflect what reboots per se are: concretely, a doppelganger, product of a creative void. It's not Cooper who is lost here, it's David Lynch himself. Maybe this is his unconscientious talking...

I will tell you one thing: after watching the first episode I was actually deceived for a moment, as I thought it was going to be great; maybe it was going to be more in the direction of FWWM, but I was OK with that. But then, after episode two I started to realize what was really going on here. At episode three, I started to cry and almost turned off my TV, as I finally understood what was happening here: it was the dead of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

Not the anon you replied to, but I feel like you can still critique Lynch's work regardless of his origins with abstract art and analysis. I don't buy that he gets a pass while other filmmakers get shit on for arguably doing some of the same things Lynch does.

And look, I like Lynch. Blue Velvet is great, Eraserhead is great, I just never thought Twin Peaks as his best work. It has flaws, and arguably most of them are what makes the show memorable. But his approach to making movies, which certainly is an art form with a basis on telling a narrative, lacks in certain films, in my opinion. But this is /tv/ so I guess it's wishful thinking to expect reasonable discussions and just call David Lynch an undeniable genius and spout shitty memes like KINO
>>
>>83104723
And you reading too little on a series created by guy who goes heavy on allegories, metaphores and tv/film industry critique.

If I had a brainlet image I would be posting that. So imagine I just did.

It was painfully obvious and borderline unsubtle. The guy watching an empty box couldnt see shit and when he gets distracted by a female normie he misses an important thing. Then they get destroyed for not paying attention to the fucking box in which Cooper appeared some minutes before.

That must be really bad then because The Leftovers was doing terrible numbers viewer wise last season, no clue if it has went up due to how acclaimed it is.

>>
>>83105956
But why criticise abstract art for a lack of narrative? Would you criticise mainstream art for an abundance of narrative? It's self-defeating. It's like criticising the colour blue for not being red. Also, Un Chien Andalou. Cinema's origins are in abstract spectacle as much as in narrative. It's like the difference between a poem and a novel.

Also, I find it strange that you think Eraserhead is great, despite almost totally lacking in a coherent plot or arc, but criticise Twin Peaks on the same grounds, despite Twin Peaks having an entirely coherent narrative that's easily intuited.
>>
I don't know if it's age or it's just too different but I was just kind of :O the whole time and I'm not sure if it was in a good way

I long ago decided to give up on decoding David Lynch since he's a surrealist but Twin Peaks has always kind of been the easy one to follow

Gonna stick with it though because I've loved Twin Peaks since forever
>>
>>83106349
I've always found tp easy to follow too, I still find that with the new series. I think once you know or figured out what blue rose means it all falls into place. have you seen eps 3 and 4 yet bc some scenes in those definitely show it going back to its routes
>>
>>83106394
I am about to start ep 3. I didn't DISLIKE it, but man, it is not palatable to the masses. I've seen most of Lynch's work and I appreciate it for all its weird surrealism but I did find the premiere to be pretty strangely different. the new series has probably the best use of CGI I have ever seen. I don't mean 'best CGI', as the images themselves are Doctor-who tier in quality, but instead of trying hard to make uncanny images pretend they are the real thing - like basically 99% of visual effects do - i think Lynch has fully exploited how fake CGI looks to create creepy and uncanny imagery.

It's like with paintings - people had been developing perspective, realistic colors, studied anatomy to get closer and closer to photorealism - untill impressionists, surrealists, cubists etc. came along and played with the medium.

Kyle talked about this in a video a while ago, especially at the end

The average person says they like "weird" stuff because they think it makes them different, but the "weird" stuff they actually like is the norm. They don't want true surreal avant-garde David Lynch shit, their definition of "weird" is Stranger Things.

It's why Reddit culture is made fun of on here. They think they're into subversive counterculture shit, but their interests are actually as mainstream as you can get.

And I'm not saying Twin Peaks wasn't mainstream, but this iteration is definitely not. The average person is not interested in stuff like this because they don't have the level of taste they claim to have.

The brand is mainstream, the content isn't. David Lynch is mainstream as far as surrealist filmmakers go, but this season is not something the average person is going to latch onto.

Yikes...

For someone who comments on pop culture you sure as fuck don't know how it works as of lately.

This is a thread about Twin Peaks having 500000 viewers. I don't give a shit about the stream numbers. It's still a show with a preexisting audience, that got a SHITLOAD of promotion from Showtime. The viewership was extremely low, most likely lower than they really expected. Just on ShowTime, pretty much every single episode of Billions had double the viewers of Twin Peaks.

When Curb Your Enthusiasm comes back for example, it will have many more viewers, with decidedly less promotion by HBO.

Twin Peaks will only go down in viewers. Not that it will matter, it's still going to finish, but this is not a moneymaker because it's just too "out there" for the average viewer. This is not a debate.

not only that but the way he is still finding ways to innovate with more traditional editing and composition technics are noteworthy too. For example that scene at the beginning of ep3 with the lady and the way he uses still frames and jumpcuts to distort time is something I never seen before and its incredibly disorienting and confusing in a good way. You really feel like you are in another dimension

nobody watches anything when they are "supposed" to now, only when they want to and have the time

This doesn't explain how the much-hyped debut of Twin Peaks, which Showtime spent months marketing both online and in-between their own programming, had less live viewers upon its debut than any of Showtime's other current dramas did in any of their episodes ever.

The show is doing decently enough critically, but viewership-wise, it's a flop so far, and it's not going to get better. Viewers don't determine the quality of a show, though. It's still the best thing on TV this year. But the mainstream appeal of Twin Peaks ended in 1992.

Ah! So there is a deeper meaning to why all of the corpses are incredibly phony looking.

it's a good thing the fans and the creator have no interest in any more twin peaks after this season then, isn't it?

art isn't measured by its popularity, certainly not its popularity when it hasnt even been fully released, it is measured by its quality

i dont think anyone thought or argued that twin peaks s3 would be some kind of massive ratings success

Well yeah, nobody expected it to be Game of Thrones, but the numbers are still lower than expected.

And like I said, viewers don't determine quality. I don't think Lynch or anyone else involved gives a fuck. They made the show they wanted. He's never cared about mass appeal, which makes his success in the industry even more remarkable, in my opinion.

>it's a good thing the fans and the creator have no interest in any more twin peaks after this season then, isn't it?

You're naive as fuck if you think this series is going to end with complete resolution + explanation of the lore. Fans will always be clamoring for more. Lynch and Frost I'm not so sure of, but they haven't said it's out of the question either, even if it seems unlikely.

Getting it done would be difficult, though, because ShowTime or any other network isn't going to give him complete control for a show that doesn't bring in money.

you think that is bad?

I'm 24 years old

a coworker brought up televisions shows like breaking bad , walking dead and some abc shit about dating

one brought up twin peaks(in my head I said my nigga) , I said I enjoy that show too

4 normies were asking about it but essentially I said the show is a fun ride and on netflix with the new season on showtime

the 4 turned to me and said " what a show from like the early 90s? how can it be good if it is soo old"

I laughed it off and said "heh you'd be surprised" but inside I felt pic related
