Haven't watched the show yet. The movie rubbed me the wrong way, but I like how they showed how anyone can be an asshole regardless of race.

Did you feel like it was really trying to pander? Was it more trying to have sentiment that was low hanging fruit than actual ideas?
what if I'm not white and I still think the show is about me?
I'm both white and not white and I think this series is great and also really offensive.

As a black soap opera, it's actually pretty decent. The characters interact well with each other trading quips and the internal conflict most of them have is satisfactory as far as an interesting story.
As a "biting satire" it completely fails. Almost nothing is satirical, except for the rich white university president's son who throws the dress-like-a-black-person party, and is such a ridiculous cartoon villain, who doesn't even show up most of the time. The characters play it off completely straight, as if this guy is in every university.
It's a prime time soap set against the flimsy backdrop of a party that, even if it did happen, would be universally chastised and its participants suspended/expelled. It's more about a black girl dating a white guy, a prim black guy wanting to goof off, a weave wearing black girl trying to WASP her way into society, and an afro nerd being awkward among all of them.
