Just rewatched alien and aliens today. I think they either aged badly or I out grown it. I think Prometheus and covenant re inject some much needed mysticism to the series.

The AVP movies give the Aliens a better backstory than Covenant. The idea that these things were made by a douchebag robot 30 years before the first movie is hilariously shit.

Covenant has most of those things, but manages to be a lesser version of Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus. Prometheus isn't that good, but it at least attempted to do new things. Covenant is just been there done that on territory that no one really cared about learning to begin with.

Covenant at least has far better dialogue that feels more in line with Alien and natural, unlike Promtheus's horribly written forced shit.

The most interesting aspects of Covenant were straight up improvements of themes introduced in Prometheus, but done through horrendous writing an dialogue, i.e all of David's scenes about creation and playing God.

Covenant had the unfortunately job of coming in and having to patch of the tripe Prometheus introduced thanks to Lindlolf, and it drags it down at times, but even at its worst it's still nowhere near as laughably bad as Prometheus was.
