When are we getting 40k kino?
>>
Fuck movies.
Those hacks at GW should make Dan Abnett to finish Gaunt's Ghosts.
>>
I'd watch a movie where a new taller Super Space Marine bullies an old manlet space marine.
>>
>>82926810

After spending a few long sessions going through countless pages of lore, I have come to the conclusion that 40k would be almost impossible to translate to film.

Maybe the Horus Heresy of you had unlimited budget and numerous films to spread it across.
>>
>>82926810
Are there adults who like 40K?
>>
>>82927038
Yes, in fact many adult children enjoy a good WH40K.
>>
>>82926969
You could fit the horus heresy in one movie. It would have to be a prequel to something or else it means nothing though.
>>
>>82926838

You could easily make a 40k kino but you couldn't present the setting fully and completely that is standard in the movie format. Also some faggot hollywood studio could easily ruin the 40k charm. What makes 40k special is it's balls to the wall unapologetic. That isn't very marketable.

How do I get into 40k?

Why would jewish companies produce a high testosterone catholic white male fantasy that promotes xenofophia, rule of law, civilization and imperialism?

What's different and so great about 40k? Is it just warhammer in space?

I don't know. I think the Primarchs are one of the most appealing parts of the universe, and I would like to be able to flesh them out fully over a few movies.

yes
>>
>>82927210

2bh i find everything in 40k so much less impactful just because "This is just one of trillions of planets and bazillionfofillion humans in the meat grinder."

Fantasy is the patricians choice.

Is there a worse fate than to end up with either?

They killed fantasy though. And it's untrue. There is still quantifiability in 40k.

They destroyed the fantasy setting, and whilst it is the patrician choice it doesn't exist outside of small groups of hangers on and videogames.

Fantasy is good.
Age of Sigmar is bloated trash that doesn't have a direction.
40k is good.
Horus Heresy is Kino

So? More than enough lore for me. And i've read enough "everyone dies the end" paperbacks from 40k to know it's just simply not engaging for me.

The vidya it's gotten in the last few years have all been great and i don't see it slowing any time soon, there's another two or three Fantasy game coming out soon.

Meanwhile the realities of Age of Shitmar means it's never going to get any coherent game that can pull off the jumping through 9 realms bullshit in an understandable manner.
>>
>>82927681
>And i've read enough "everyone dies the end" paperbacks from 40k

You mean exactly the same thing that happened with WHFB? Also original fantasy games are gone from here on out. Just give 40k a try pal it's not bad at all.
>>
>>82927715

Yeah, and i don't like end times. What's your point? 40k shows us you don't need to advance the plot, so why can't we just get more exploration of the Fantasy Universe (as we have been recently).

Also, as i said there are like 3 more Fantasy games slated for future release, it's getting a new lease on life in the Vidya world.

Certainly everything i've seen from fantasy is heads and shoulders above DoW3 or Space Marine in pure gameplay terms.

/tg/fag reporting in, I can tell you right now no one wants (or will get) a 40k movie. For it to be good, it'll have to hit on all the gothic, Nazi-esque, John Blanche styled kickassery. However, this will alienate it from mainstream and if it gets big people will haaaaaate the Imperium.

Think about it, with success of movies like Avatar and shit most audiences are more likely to root for Eldar or Tau. The only way to get a genuine 40kino is something small, like Lord Inquisitor (which looks cool so far). But quality/authenticity vs marketability isn't anything new

Honestly, I don't see the point of a 40k movie. imo it'd probably be the same as vidya movies, just weird and kinda silly. Good 40k vidya though, we need more of. Space Hulk dindu nuffin

That's one of the biggest problems. There are no good guys in 40k proper. The closest thing to good guys are still a race of hierarchical space communists. Hollywood needs to have good guys.

Now as a TV series, you would stand a better chance. I would say that 40k is one of the few franchises where it isn't possible to go overboard on.
>>
>>82927246
the lord of the rings fellowship of the ring was able to flesh out an entire party of characters and they became well established.

theres what, 4 chaos gods, 13 primarchs and emperor? you could easily fit that into a trilogy. easily.
>>
Just make Ciaphas Cain movies.
>>
>>82927329
Yeah

In the Felix and Gotrek books, you sorta got the feeling that they went around saving so much ass that these two people, TWO people actually managed to significantly better the world. In 40k, no matter what happens, even the most devastating defeats or victories don't mean much in the grand scale of things.
>>
>>82926838
There's really interesting interview with both Abnett and Laurie Goulding separately talking about what was going on within GW/Black Library around 2015 which led to many writers dropping out, a reduction in new novels as well as the delay on the next Gaunt's Ghosts book (Warmaster - out Dec 17) coming out.

You can probably guess what happened - essentially the creative bit of BL, which included things like a Writers' Circle to discuss future novels (inc. HH) and how to tie them together, was shitcanned. Editors no longer had any control over the publication process and it was all turned over to Sales who wanted the authors to just shit out a production line of tie-ins, cheap novellas etc without any coherence. Unsurprisingly several authors & editors left (King, Goulding etc) and others slowed down their work (ADB, Abnett). Now, apparently, things have been reverted back to the previous system so some are slowly returning to the fold - hence The Warmaster finally being released (Oi Abnett you lazy fuck! Where's the new Bequin novel?).

The interviews:

http://www.trackofwords.com/2017/04/27/interview-with-dan-abnett-april-2017-part-two/

Definitely worth a read if you have any interest in BL and what's been going on behind the scenes in the last few years - I've definitely noticed a real drop in quality since about 2013/14 and always wondered WTF happended - BL was basically a money print for GW.

Doesn't look like it, since it used to be a biannual thing.
Though granted, it's fairly open for more if he ever feels like it.

Ward was rehired, probably to do this, but he left because of negative shit in the first place. Again, nobody knows what Ward has done or is doing any more. Furthermore, Ward hates Ultramarines, everything he's done is to make them so brilliant and great that people instinctively hate them. The Spess Muhreens he likes are Blood Angels and Grey Knights.

is there a hollywood director and production team who can accurately capture the wh40k feel? the mixture of absurdity and horror and the character of each of the races/factions

video games succeed because the focus is on the action, however you can't be as forgiving with a movie as you can with a video game cutscene

Could a director portray the fanaticism of the 4 chaos cults, including the more difficult to understand nurgle? most likely they will insert their own memes and cliches, they will likely also tone down the shock value, the perversions of slaanesh which involves bestiality with demons which is borderline illegal in some countries, the Griffith style passion of tzeentch, some horror/action director might be able to portray Khorne maybe though

what about ork, tyranids, tau, eldar and necrons? do normies really "get" those, which will we see? how much will have to be left out to avoid a convoluted plot
>>
>>82933110
Only movie that comes close in dedication and somewhat the tone is Black Dynamite.
>>
>>82929024

So what you're saying is, you've never played any of the games, nor read any of the books, nor lurked in any Warhams threads? Daemons CAN leave the Warp, and cultists often summon them.

>"Muh basebuilding" turned into some stupid half-assed schlock

People wanted fucking Dawn of War 2 on a vastly bigger scale. Gritty colours, blood, kill animations, perfect voice acting. Fucking space war. Dark and rough. Harsh and cold. Better AI and cover system, many, many more units.
>>
>tfw like 40k setting and art but everything else is trash
:)
>>
>>82933110

It's only hard if you put it all in one movie and expect everyone to be perfectly fleshed out in one two hour film.

You can easily examine the depths of each race / faction if you focus hard enough. It'd have to be similar to the MCU in the slow set up they did before going whole hog with Avengers. This is all assuming you want every race deeply examined, leaving the Crons, Nids and even to an extent Chaos and Eldar/Tau as mysterious would really serve the narrative of any Humanity focused storyline far better than explaining the minutia of the Aliens.

Only race that would need actual explanation is the Orks because "Wait what, they're fucking space mushrooms who are all telekenetically linked to just make what they want happen happen with genetically coded blueprints in their brains? Why are they football hooligans?" ect.

Ironic the most 'simple' race on the face is probably the most insane unique shit in the whole setting if you dive into it.

Those are fine for the usual bolter porn (although Legion at least tries something different which is why it got a mixed reception). The Eisenhorn series for me really nailed the 40k lore and feel - away from the bloody battlefield and the true grinding nature of life as a human in an unforgiving universe. A lot of other books end up just being fan service.

I think even with things getting back "on track" for BL, the days of series like Eisenhorn, Shia Calpurnia, Cain etc (i.e. anything not Marines/bolter porn) are done.

Seriously, if Hollywood is going to do anything with the 40K universe, it'll be set in 2K. Maybe a psychological thriller about a "modern day" psyker dealing with his powers and the daemon in his head. It costs much less to set it in the modern day.

If you are going to read a HH book. I would suggest reading the Fulgrim one. It's really interesting to see what Slaneesh does to an chapter/group of people. And how it really works (People think their followers just do drugs and fuck around. Reading about that painterwho went mad trying to copy a certain color she saw in a Slaneeshi Temple or Fulgrim losing his shit because his sculptures looked like shit was fun
>>
>>82936371
Don't listen to this guy >>82936649, those ones sucked.

All 3 Ravenor books came out years ago - do you mean the second book in the Bequin trilogy? That's been MIA for a while.

Read the Gaunt's Ghost novels by Adnett - new one is out in Dec. Read the Shia Calpurnia trilogy bny Matt Farrier. These give you a great 40k lore insight. In terms of HH, it starts strong (other than Descent of Angels) and then dips significantly in quality other than the Abnett and ADB additions (although The Unremembered Empire was a bit sketchy) - still it's worth reading all of the HH ones and there are some gems (First Heretic, Legion, Pathway to Heaven).

In terms of the Grey Knights, the first three from Ben Counter are good, but the best is the stand-alone The Emperor's Gift by ADB. The original three Space Wolf books (Space Wolf, Blood Claw & Grey Hunter) by William King are essential Marine novels that go from Ragnar as a tribesman, through him becoming a Marine onwards. The ones that followed, from various other others, were hit or miss.
>>
Producer here with minimal to no-knowledge of the source material, aka the best person for the job.
Alright, here's what we do:

Imperial Guard, they're more approachable and human, right? Can be played by pretty actors and women? They're pretty much the colonial marines from Aliens?
We set it up as a team of soldiers from the Imperial Guard being sent to some whatever base in a far off planet to investigate a distress call. Maybe the planet was researching something to help them in the war.

The team is pretty casual, there's some banter and quips to make them likeable. Maybe 3 guys, divided in the usual leader/sarcastic guy/meathead and 2 women, one is the no-nonsense nanny and the other is the quriky nerdy one.

They meet some scientists, fight some Tyranids first because they're easy mooks that can lead to a quick and good action scene.
Next, an ork spaceship crashlands on the planet, they're looking for whatever MacGuffin is held in the planet. Why orks? Simple, they're green, silly, have accents, audiences will eat them up, we could sell a lot of merch with them.
Then we get a Space Marine, he's sent after the team requests help. He's stoic and noble, he's gonna be our serious side for the film.

So now we can start act 3. Meathead dies along with some other scientist while a bunch of shit is happening.
Scientist has been taking them to the center of the base, and it's then revealed he was actually evil the whole time and we get Chaos in, because space-slugs and dumb green guys don't make serious stakes, demons do.

Then it's a run for the macguffin, Space Marine destroys it and has a final fight with a demon-scientist or whatever.
Everyone dies.
Leader guy sacrifices himself to save quirky girl, saying he always loved her.

Movie ends with Space Marine and girl survivor on a ship back, she's all sad and shit, and she promises to continue investigating the macguffin as we set up the sequel.

With a good marketing campaign we can get at least 600M.

Thanks.

I was talking about the second book in the Ravenor trilogy, "Ravenor Returned". I got halfway through and then kind of lost interest. Hiatus may have been a confusing way to describe it. I did like the first book and nothing really irks me about the second, but the part I'm at just feels dull.

>Also original fantasy games are gone from here on out.
Vermintide just came out not too long ago. Or is that going to be the last WH Fantasy game ever?

Play Space Hulk: Deathwing.
It plays like a smarter Left 4 Dead.

Read good 40K novels:

Gaunts Ghosts series
Eisenhorn trilogy
Storm of Iron by Graham Mcneill
I've heard good things about the night lords books.

The good novels from skilled writers who actually give a shit are far and away the best think to come out of the setting. Video games tend to either get the atmosphere right but have a shallow plot(deathwing) or have a decent plot but make the universe itself a lot more bland and generic than it's meant to be(space marine/dawn of war).

>There are no good guys in 40k proper.
I have scheduled a meeting with an inquisitor for you. I sure hope this heresy is a one time occurrence.

>Imperium and Xenos have worked together many times since the late 80's onwards.
Examples please. I really dig 40k lore, but don't feel like digging through the lexicanum to find it.

I don't even care if they're an entire chapter of Gary Stu's, I love me some Spess Pallies

Tried reading the first one, Trollslayer, some weeks ago. What a horrible and generic read those two chapters were. Never got further.

You basically described the story to WH40K: Space Marine. Although, there were no tyrannids in it. They used basic ork boyz, squigs and gretchins instead as the "easy to kill" intro enemies instead.
