There are actually multiple castes to that race and the egineers are just one. There are also 'the warriors' but they went almost extinct fighting against an unknown threat, waging an intergalactic war of attrition beyond the borders of explored space. Engineers are just a really old species of naturally occurring life forms. They're the Alien-verse equivalent of real life humans but thousands of years, if not millions, more advanced. They've mastered biological engineering to the point that all their tech is biological in nature. That's why their suits seem more like exo-skeletons than suits. It's why they can integrate with their ships and there's very little machinery. They've advanced so far they're basically gods. They don't need to sleep except to pass the time. They probably don't need to eat or drink water either, their suits recycle everything. They've edited their own DNA so much that they've essentially become one race. Since they can do artificial births better than nature, there's no need for females so they've also become a single sex (though I think a female engineer is seen in Covenant). So you have an advanced human-like race that evolved past all humanity and are totally masters of their biology.

They've grown tall and pale from space travel. They've explored space so long and noticed it was so empty so they started seeding planets with life. This is where the in-universe Earth life comes from. Engineers have also kind of went crazy from all the power and loneliness. Their architecture is dark and perverse. All these repressed sexual desires and urges manifest through their technology. Which is why face huggers and aliens seem so rapey. They don't process things like humans and have totally different priorities.

They're crazy space god aliens who just want friends but are bitterly disappointed in Humanity given that we killed their emissary and continued to show barbarism when Shaw was abused in front of an Engineer. They wanted us to become civilized and explore space with them. Instead we create abominations in the form of non-life (David) and still hurt each other.
