Birdman is more ambiguous than that. Him flying away is just as valid an interpretation as him killing himself. Personally I feel like it doesn't matter which one happened, as the point of that last scene is that his daughter finally sees him as the superhero he wanted her to see him as. In fact, it doesn't even matter if the hospital scene happened at all or if he actually killed himself at the theater, as the point there is rather that he proved the critics wrong -- he actually was an actor of merit.
