Like I accept that a messianic or 'The One'-type character is an ancient and totally relevant idea, but there are lazy uses where it's so often bestowed on a main character who is otherwise unremarkable and even nondescript where it goes beyond being a universal surrogate Hero and goes into that wanky power fantasy that doesn't really earn its way towards empowerment or reveal any truths. Just some random guy or girl shows up and everyone bows down exclaiming "you're THE ONE", for some reason.
