Well it is definitely "feminist" in nature as it essentially a story about women surviving against men, and depicting masculinity as a corrosive and bad force (not something I agree with, but I don't have to agree with the creator to think it's an interesting vision and well told).

Obviously the nominal antagonist is Mitcham, and most of the themes of the show can be traced back through him. I think Campion intended to show how bad the patriarchy is for both men and women through his relationships with his family and the town. That he is not a black and white villain though is a huge strength of the show. He suffers more than anyone, perhaps, and is apparently filled with self-loathing and insecurity. The true antagonist of the series is the culture of uncaring and insensitivity of the town's people and institutions (see: the twist ending).
