Galen Erso didn't design the ventilation shaft. He just made the reactor volatile. That's why Galen didn't tell them about the venitlation plans, and why they needed to go to Scarif to steal the plans (so they could find a way to access the reactor.)

Luke still had to hit an impressively small target, nothing has changed about that.
