This is something that is said often here and I remember a false leak saying his death was much more brutal because was a dick. But, the actor was aware that Jimmy was not going to make during the creation of the first season. I think I remember reading something about him even suggesting it happening as well. This also shouldn't ruin the show for you as I am sure that many actors in your favorite television show or movie is a complete cunt.

The entire second season revolves around Jimmys self destructive path and inevitable death. If Jimmy really was such a cunt that they wanted an excuse to kill him off I doubt they'd craft the entire season around him while also making him a sympathetic hero

Both Jimmy and Nucky were main characters.

Jimmy represented the new generation that is more erratic and violent if not outright crazy and Nucky represented the old "gentleman" gangster who is in bed with local big businesses and politicians.

Them playing off each other, especially since they have personal ties, worked wonderfully as the main premise of the show.

You can tell that after Pitt left they didn't know what the fuck to do with Nucky so they had him sit around, look constipated and sip his drink on slow motion while literally everyone else in the show schemed completely random shit.

In the end they had to lean heavily onto historical gangsters and Nucky was demoted to an afterthought.
