If you want to make a predator movie, show more of their homeworld, more of their culture, lots of easter egg stuff and "wow I always wondered..." stuff, like the AVP:Requiem shots of their planet, and how they can track ships with their technology. Show their language, how they communicate with each other, their caste systems, their internal politics of clan rivalries (not the Predators movie, superpred was stupid and should be retconned with 'one off genetic experiment gone wrong and won't happen any more'). Also we should see them on other planets, hunting and killing different species and their architecture, collecting trophies, etc. A good AVP movie could have colonial marines in it, in the future.

Predator was campy masturbatory commando subversion schlock about some of earth's biggest bad asses being pitting against The Ultimate Predator hunting them for sport.

Terminator 2 is so well regarded largely because it subverted the formula by making the sequel a secret character piece about the monster.

In terms of the premise and the creative direction and art design, it's taking the Predators/T2 sympathetic monster ally and doing a buddy cops Fury meets district 9 Predator movie.

That can be a welcome change. It's a way better premise than Predator in New York or Mercenaries in Predator land.

In rewatch is has it's bad moments, and obviously is just enjoyable at times action shlock. A lot like Aliens where when Vasquez and Gorman die the movie loses steam, same thing with this and Hanzo. I usually stop watching after the katana fight.
Also Lawrence Fishburne's character was distracting and felt out of place. He mainly just served to explain the scenario and get the Yakuza guy a katana.

Predator is an efficient, atmospheric and effective action movie.
