>The grungy re-imagining of the medieval tale was initially earmarked as the beginning of another one of those crushingly inevitable "shared universe" franchises, with multiple spin-offs introducing other major characters like Lancelot and Merlin, who would then eventually come together for their own Avengers-style Camelot movie. Warner Bros had also spent over a decade attempting to bring a new iteration of the story to the big screen.

What a fucking embarrassment. Who runs these studios.

Why don't they learn? John Carter was at least not a remake. But it was still based on a century old IP. No bells ringing after that one?

Ben Hur, Robin Hood, King Arthur. I get it, they're old so they're cheap. Same reason you greenlit 20 fairytale movies until that fad died. But Jesus fucking Christ the amount of original stuff just dying in development, compared to this stuff you think is "safe". It isn't. It's consistently failing. >EVERY movie they have will "under preform" and most will fucking bomb hard

Kong: Skull Island
166 million to make. x2 for marketing: 332
564 million box office. 1.6 return.

I guess if you just say it didn't meet whatever imaginary 2 billion goal the producers claimed it could do it underperformed.

But it didn't really. That's respectable for a pretty cheap movie. For comparison Avengers: Age of Ultron cost 459 mil, x2=918 million. It took in 1,4 billion but with the budget and marketing that's still just a 1.5x return.

It's this math that is the reason no-budget horror movies that cost a couple of million to make can be amazing investments. Because with minimal budget, if they build enough hype, they can get astronomical returns.

Remake an old film. It made money then so it should make money now!
Pulling an IP from the depths of obscurity/weebshit. I mean GitS made money, so why can't it make money here?
And of course
Cinematic universe. After the guaranteed success, we can make EVEN MORE MONEY
And of course it fails, because that's not how shit works. But since it "should" have worked, nobody loses their jobs. The only people who take no risks are the suits, burning through company money to throw darts at a board.

I agree that this is what's happening, but the question is why aren't people going to the cinema as much as they used to? It is fatigue from too many films being released? >>82827932
It's true that Hollywood always stumbled into things, but from the 1920s to the early 1990s or so, they've always had a strong core of professionals who understood the craft of filmmaking. They knew how to write engaging screenplays, how to film actors interacting in a way that makes you care, how to pace scenes, and so on. I don't know what happened to those people. It's like the last of them all retired and nobody took their place or something. The modern Hollywood blockbusters look like they were made by film students with no life experience and no understanding of the craft, who can only ape previous films or create video game cutscene-looking shit cgi fests. Even crappy 80s B-movies and dumb action flicks have more craft and heart than these modern blockbusters. They weren't good movies, but the people made them had an understanding of the simple, little things - nowadays even something as fundamental as pacing constantly gets fucked up, and modern films have schizophrenic pacing that follows no logic or artistic principle.

There are plenty of decent directors still. You touched upon the real problem at the end: editing. Nowadays the studios mess with films at the editing stage way more than they used to and in a different way; it's a "too many cooks" thing, and these guys don't know anything about the sort of classical theory you are talking about. The problem is everyone in the industry thinks they know how to make a movie and can get their hands dirty.

Easy... you just make a round table movie (avengers) and then individual movies for the main characters (Arthur movie, Merlin movie, Morgana movie, Mordred movie, and so on)

It is not a good idea at all but it can be done.

>>82825143

Why did they even think they would get away with that? Planning for several movies when the concept is not proven is amateurish at best. Marvel kind of test drove it's cinematic universe making comic events for years so they at least knew there was SOME audience for what they where attempting to do, if only the geek audience.

But this? a new Arthur on a John Carter/ Snow white and the huntsmen tone? how do theses execs en up convincing themselves this is a good idea that is going to sell.

>Marvel kind of test drove it's cinematic universe making comic events for years so they at least knew there was SOME audience for what they where attempting to do, if only the geek audience.
But the "Avengers initiative" was clearly always in the long-term plan, it was in the postcredits scene of the original Iron Man. They had literally always planned to do it.

The big secret behind Marvel's success at building a shared cinematic universe, where so many others failed, is that the movies were actually decent and they made the audiences care enough about the characters to want to pay for a shared cinematic universe

I don't get why they don't make their own original ip instead of drudging up stuff robin hood and king arthur and then making movies out of tone and similarity with them. Both of you missed a very key point:

>the studios are reluctant to take on new directors/scripts and risk shekels
>the same studios also don't want to provide high entertainment to the proles because they might learn things (Imagine something like Sharpe's or Legend of the Galactic Heroes hitting the big screen....not gonna happen)
>the same studios also treat screenwriters like shit and pay them even worse (despite the films quality being dependent on a good script)

Ultimately the avoidance of risks, dependence on tarnished liberal talking mouths, the fear of learning proles, and the over-reliance on CGI and known IPs are leading to the decline in Hollywood entertainment.

As for streaming services/home movie theatres/price of admission and concessions/etc etc those are a 'symptom' of the problem: people are avoiding theatres because of the bullshit being released and will just wait until they can 'safely' stream it/pirate/etc. So even would-be moviegoers are avoiding risks. Cest la vie

Yes, but it didn't just occur to them to do it... they saw it work with the comics. Marvel has been having events like civil war and secret invasion and whatnot for years now. It was a proven concept, albeit not on cinema.

and what i meant by doing what i said you'd do is that you would imply i'm the one trying to fit in, and that you would try to seem like you don't care about any of this when you clearly do. however i didn't expect you to go the extra mile and make your priorities even more obvious with that direct claim to being an oldfag

The iron spiderman is actually a thing during civil war... not exactly the thing they are doing because Marvel just doesn't dare to make Iron Man look like an asshole in the cinematic universe... but Tony does take Peter as his protegee for a while, give him an special suit, make him reveal his identity and all that (off course he uses it to study his spider sense and whatnot to be ready for his betrayal later)

Not the point... the point is as far as fucking the characters go Marvel keeps it relatively close to the source compared to other companies.

Even though they do shit on a lot of stuff like they did with... mostly everything after Winter Soldier.

Having seen it, I can tell you that this is very much not the Arthur of legend, nor is it trying to be, In the movie, Camelot's already an established kingdom, possibly created by Uther Pendragon, who is decidedly not the lustful bastard we know so well from Excalibur. In a very real sense, Uther feels more like the King Arthur we know, complete with showdown with Mordred and betrayal at the hands of family. Magic is the sole province of a subset of humanity they refer to as mages, sort of like Rowling's wizards. Boorman's too for that matter.

This is set in a true fantasy world, not a mythic 5th Century England, at least not one from our own past. Boorman's film would suffer from a lot of the same criticisms were it to be released today, with its anachronistic armor and artistic choices that force the audience to do at least some of the thinking. Today's braindead "critics" would literally shit all over it and sadly, the overwhelming majority of people here shitting on it right now would follow suit because most of you have never had an opinion that someone else didn't pour into your empty skulls.

>Not the point... the point is as far as fucking the characters go Marvel keeps it relatively close to the source compared to other companies.

Here's a short list of how close they're *not* keeping it to the source material:

Thor is not a god, although there's a damn good chance that's about to be retconned, similar to my next point which is . . .

Magic isn't a thing on earth, until, oops! It so totally is.

Hawkeye was never voluntarily a bad guy, nor did he ever have a change of heart and reform, nor was he ever a circus performer.

Tony Stark can flat-out beat the Hulk.

The Vision is worthy of the power of Thor, but Cap doesn't quite make the cut.(Arguable, I know, but that shouldn't be left up to interpretation.)

Tony Stark is now canonically the guy who just telegraphed the phrase "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."

If that's keeping it "relatively close" to the source material, my ass is a banjo.

No, they had a joke scene where Tony and Rhodey are quipping rationalizations for why the Vision can lift the hammer when they can't. By that logic, Tony should be able to lift the hammer with a remote-controlled suit and any mechanical equipment should be able to lift it as well.

In other words, it's them covering their ass for a shitty shortcut to showing you how "noble" and "worthy" the Vision is, but not really, because lighthearted entertainment.

564 box office is gross, not profit. I think the average is 70% of gross domestic and varying degrees less for foreign, generally still decent in the West and pretty shit in the third world/China.
166 domestic, 398 foreign. 70% of 166 = 116. An optimistic 50% of foreign would be 199. That's 315 taken back on an investment of 300-350. So they're probably in a break even/minor loss range.
And before some rabid shitposter starts the >imblyign, Paul Feig himself said Ghostbusters would have to pass 500mil to start making money, and that was on 144mil production budget and, I assume, a similar marketing budget, slightly less than Kong.

>I think the average is 70% of gross domestic and varying degrees less for foreign

The take of the domestic box office gross varies during the time it's being played, at the beginning of the box office run the studio typically gets 60%, sometimes 70% if it's a big hit, then the longer it runs the percentage shifts in favour of the theatres.

A movie that does well will usually net the studio ~60% of the domestic box office gross during it's run.

>generally still decent in the West and pretty shit in the third world/China.

China has a law that only permits foreign film studios to get 25% of the gross, worldwide foreign take of the gross is ~25-35% for studios, so a movie has to do GREAT in foreign markets to be saved if it bombs domestically.

I thought Bullseye was completely and utterly insane. Robbing banks is pretty silver age but when you're completely nuts and love killing people baseball isn't really going to cut it
>>
>>82831758
>>82831816
She was originally guinevere but was so fuckin shit at her role they had to cut all of her from the film except one or two scenes and completely changed her role. The whole ending of the film was meant to involve her and lancelot but they scrapped it, messing up the entire way this film was meant to tie into the rest of the franchise.
>>
>>82831622
watched the scene and critiqued it from front to back. if that's your example of a good scene then the film must fucking suck. you're a stupid baby retard who doesn't even deserve my response

Why does Lancelot seem like a fanfic character added in?
>>
>>82831936
I liked the ending they had now, although I thought they could have done more to set up a sequel with the vikings, King Arthur vs the great heathen army would be pretty cool
>>
>>82825561
I thought it was a good movie and would see it again. I wanted to see it because I love King Arthur shit, my friend wanted to see it for that SoA actor, and we both wanted to see it because of this one meme we both saw about maybe a year ago.

I can't find it anymore, but it was Hollywood basing their next blockbuster off of 2016's most trending Twitter hashtag, with it being #cuck and then a picture of King Arthur showing in theaters.
>>
I thought it was pretty good. Didnt feel its length at all, was thoroughly entertained.
>>
>>82831930
Actually yea Bullseye went right from baseball player to hitman. He didn't go through a bank robbery phase like most other comic villains of the 60s and 70s.
>>
>>82831998

He literally is, the French added him.
>>
>>82831998
Isnt lancelot initially another legend from different area, but when Arthur's myth became more wellspread, the people back then just retcon the whole thing to bridge those two tales?

a lot of arthurian legends were stuffs mix and matched from medieval england thrown together. Merlin isnt even a person actually, its just a title for somekind of druid high wizard or something, but I guess the one we got until now is pretty cool.
>>
>>82831963
Does she die in the film? I haven't actually seen it lel I just know some people who worked on it. That fucking production had more funny stories than anything else they worked on. It was a complete clusterfuck, most people were hopeful it could end up a cult classic in the "so bad it's good category". I don't know if editing saved it in the end but I know some previous versions that got scrapped halfway through shooting or even after.
>>
>>82831632
I think Merlin was going to be one of the first solo films.

I have very strong opinions on a scene that I did see and it FUCKING SUCKS AND IS RETARDED

you're a stupid dumbass. there's no going around it. you posted a really, really shitty scene from a presumably even worse movie and it was horrible and I explained why in detail
>>
>>82831998
Because that's what he is. He was added in 100 years after the King Arthur myths were made. During the time the myths became really popular again and Lancelot somehow managed to squeeze his way into being canon

In Britain it was found that one of the centurions may have been from (or stationed in at one point) North Africa. Now likely this would have been an ethnic Roman colonist or at most an ex-carthaginian local, a tanned pagan soldier at most

But the crazy black community in Britain, longing for belonging, went apeshit over the discovery and claim said soldier was black West African, not knowing a thing about how and what the colonisation of coastal North Africa was and who lived there, trying to exploit the Foothold fallacy for political gain

Keep saying this but there is a crisis in film promotion.

Another film nobody (normal) knew was even out.

Film companies are doing everything online and think buzz on twitter equals something in the real world, it doesn't.

Fire the hipsters and hire back the old Don Drapers.

Every movie I witness coming out of Hollywood is pushing political messages by 20-something liberals with zero life experience. Look at that retarded show being made that is literally 'dude what if the evil republican christrians were in charge of society??' and totally ignore that every extreme patriarchal/degradation of women is currently right this very moment being practiced in the majority of the muslim world, but they get a pass. So no, I'm not paying to be told what to think by a bunch of trust fund baby writers and directors.

its a lot more historically accurate than most hollywood depictions of Rome, that's why I liked that scene

personally I liked the movie because they changed the story quite a lot and I thought it was an improvement. Instead of Messala being a local roman aristocrat recently returned from his indoctrination in Rome which leads to a falling out with Judah, he's a ward in Judah's house from a disgraced Roman family who is unsatisfied with his place in life so joins the army. When he comes back later as an officer he attempts to get Judah to help him prevent violence in Jerusalem by naming names of zealots. Judah balks at this which leads to the falling out between the two of them. Judah's sister is helping out the zealots and when he finds out he kicks them out of his house except for one kid he hopes to unindoctrinate, but the kid has been radicalized by Rome killing his family. During the parade through the city that kid attacks a Roman officer then flees (instead of the accident of the loose roof tile) this leads to the downfall of Judah's house.

I thought this was a much more satisfying way to do it, both of them are in the wrong which makes their reconciliation after the chariot race much more satisfying.

It was from the renaissance when thinkers had a boner for pagan greece/rome and thought the fall of them was the worst thing

The term "dark" just means lack of information, in reality it's gone away because more research has shed light on the period, removing the darkness

There still are real Dark ages though, like the mysteirous Greek Dark Age of the bronze age
>>
>>82832779
>and thought the fall of them was the worst thing
are you implying it wasn't?
>>
>>82832779
It's still a dark age for Britain, and it was British scholars who started it. Like holy shit we know almost nothing about that period.

>greek dark age of the bronze age

The greek bronze age was the mycenaean age, of wich we know just as much as other bronze age information. The greek dark age was during the archaic period during the migrations of the doric and later ionic peoples.

Please don't spread misinformation.

As for the dark ages question, in britain there sure were dark ages in the early medieval period. See my answer here:>>82831082

Or it could have something to do with Vision having an infinity stone as part of him, or the fact that he is probably the most pure out of all of them (cap included) because he is an AI that was given sentience
>>
>>82833547
Purity and worthiness are two related but different things. By your metric, an infant could lift Mjolnir and wield the power of Thor.

Also, see >>82831303 and >>82831137 and the fact the discussion started with how they're keeping things "relatively close" to the source material.
>>
>>82832256
I meant in general, they let filmmakers do what they want and don't always play it safe
>>
>>82833649
I wasn't implying that the infinity stone allows him to wield it because it's so powerful, but I do think that would factor in to whether or not the hammer judges him as worthy. This is a lot of speculation but I would say that the reason infants/Captain America can't wield the hammer is that being worthy involves being pure and already possessing some strength, Thor is able to wield the hammer because he is already a powerful being and has a noble heart, if someone like Cap were to wield the hammer then the hammer would be pretty much the only thing giving him power besides his muscles.

>Jews have controlled Hollywood since the beginning

Actually thats not technically true, by the end of the1960's yes, production and studio execs were mostly jewish so you can say they 'Run the show' by then.

However before then they were only amongst the hollywood elites with the regular goy's (mostly writing staff...hence alot of subversive material coming out at athe time, along with communist buddies.)

The execs only make decisions because they think it makes money, and they think grim takes on high folklore will make money, people now legit cringe and groan when some ad comes up for some xXxDarkAndEdgyxXx take on an old story

But the constant flops say otherwise, likewise how DCU's grim flicks are crushed by Marvel's upbeat capekino. For being supposedly amazing moneymakers, those jews are actually quite terrible at money matters
